Signal generator for identifying audio frequencies by manually matching the pitch. Identifying feedback frequencies rapidly and precisely as an audio tech in a concert situation is a crucial function. Sometimes the feedback is intermittent, or only happens for an instant. For decades I and others have used the procedure of holding a heard pitch in my head and them matching it with some sort of tone generator. There are several iPhone apps that I have used, holding the phone up to my ear to hear the tone. They all have either a dial or a slider to set the pitch. An endless dial can be very precise, but is difficult to operate without looking at the screen. A slider is resolution limited by the length on the screen and so can't be precise. ToneGen PlusMinus uses a novel pitch setting UI which I invented 20 years ago for a Palm III app I wrote. It is very easy to rapidly and precisely match a frequency across it's range of 30 Hz to 10 kHz, without looking at the screen at all. The farther up or down from center your touch slides, the faster the pitch changes. Slide back to center and it stays stable.

Hum is a precise tone and noise generator. Nothing is sampled or looped — every sound is synthesized on your device in real time, so it never repeats and never runs out. THE GENERATOR Any frequency from 20 Hz to 20 kHz on a logarithmic dial, so every octave gets equal travel and the useful range is actually reachable. Sine, square, triangle and sawtooth. Tap a common value or dial an exact one. NOISE White, pink and brown, generated continuously with an equal-power crossfade. No audible seam, however long you leave it running. BINAURAL BEATS Set a carrier tone and a beat rate; Hum sends a slightly different frequency to each ear. Presets are named by rate — Delta 2 Hz, Theta 6 Hz, Alpha 10 Hz — never by claimed effect. Headphones required: the effect does not occur over speakers. LAYER AND SAVE Stack tones, noise and beats into one mix, balance each layer, and keep it in your library. SLEEP TIMER Fade out over 5 to 60 minutes. The fade is scheduled on the audio clock rather than a JavaScript timer, so it stays accurate while the phone is locked. BACKGROUND PLAYBACK Keeps playing when you leave the app or lock the screen, with working lock screen and Control Center controls. WHAT IS FREE The full 20 Hz to 20 kHz generator, all three noise colors, binaural beats, sleep timers, background playback, and most presets. HUM PRO Unlimited layers in a mix, unlimited saved mixes, and every preset. ABOUT THE FREQUENCIES Names like "Solfeggio" and "432 Hz" are the conventional names for those numbers, not claims about them. Hum makes no health or medical claims and is not a medical device. Listen at a comfortable level. Prolonged exposure to loud sound can damage hearing, and pure tones are harder to judge by ear than music. Hum Pro is available monthly, yearly, or as a one-time lifetime purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the period ends; manage or cancel in your Apple ID settings.
