BUKA is a parent-guided study tool that helps learners focus on the words and Chinese characters they haven’t mastered yet. Instead of repeating the whole list, BUKA keeps the difficult items in practice and lets mastered ones step aside. No ads. No account required. Study data is stored on your device by default. BUKA grew out of real homework sessions with my daughter. We kept seeing the same problem: some words looked familiar when the answer was right there, but disappeared when she had to recall and write them on her own. Sometimes a word was correct today and forgotten again a few days later. So I built a simple system for capturing what actually needs more work and bringing it back until it sticks. HOW THE THREE-COLOR METHOD WORKS Every new card starts in Red. During practice, BUKA selects a small set from your Red and Yellow cards. First recall the answer, then write it down, check your work, and update the card: Red — Still learning. Keep practicing. Yellow — Correct this time, but review again. Green — Mastered for now. Give it a break. For Chinese, learners can use Pinyin as a cue and write the matching characters. For English, learners can use the Chinese meaning as a cue and write the English word or phrase. The point isn’t to tap “Know” or “Don’t Know.” BUKA asks you to do the real work first: recall, write, check, then decide what still needs practice. GOOD FOR REVIEWING • Chinese characters, words, and commonly missed items • English words and phrases • Mistakes from homework, quizzes, spelling practice, or dictation • School vocabulary and key terms • Custom review lists organized by a parent KEY FEATURES • Three-color card box — Red, Yellow, and Green make mastery easy to see • Recall before reveal — try to remember before checking the answer • Writing practice — don’t just look at the answer; write it • Chinese and English cards • Batch import for faster setup • Adjustable number of items per practice round • Study History to review completed sessions • Backup import and export • Works on iPhone and iPad WHY I BUILT BUKA I don’t believe better learning always means doing more exercises. Once a mistake has shown us exactly what needs attention, it makes more sense to focus there instead of repeatedly reviewing everything. I’ve spent more than 15 years working in digital product development, including years building education products. More importantly, I’m a dad who has spent countless evenings helping my daughter with homework, spelling, corrections, and review. The three-color card method started as something we used at home. After I shared it with other parents, many asked whether there could be an app for it. That became BUKA. BUKA is meant to be a quiet, focused tool for family study: Keep what still needs work. Practice it deliberately. Let go of what’s already learned.
