Most sleep apps show you a REM band. No phone on earth can measure REM — it is defined by eye movement and brain activity, and a phone can observe neither. Rested Well reports what it actually observed. When a night could not be measured, it says so instead of inventing a number. WHAT IT MEASURES Put your phone on the mattress beside your pillow. Overnight it tracks movement and sound to work out when you were asleep, when you woke, and how long it took you to drop off. Sleep and wake are scored with Cole–Kripke and Webster rescoring — published actigraphy methods used in sleep research, not a hand-tuned guess. Every score is broken down on screen so you can see exactly how each number was reached. WHAT IT REFUSES TO REPORT REM, from a phone. It cannot be done. Deep sleep, from a phone. Two phones on the same mattress, on the same night, reported 0 minutes and 178 minutes of it. A figure that disagrees with itself that badly is not a measurement. A night it could not read. If the phone was too far away to feel you move, Rested Well tells you that in the morning and tells you where to put it tonight — rather than showing you a confident score built on nothing. Wear an Apple Watch and Rested Well will show the real stages it records, because those are measured. ONE THING TO CHANGE TONIGHT A score you cannot act on is just a number. Every morning Rested Well suggests one specific change, drawn from what it actually saw — and says nothing at all on the nights when nothing stood out. Fixing Sleep looks across your nights for patterns worth naming, and tells you how many nights each finding rests on. ALSO IN THE APP • Smart alarm — wakes you at a light moment inside a window before your alarm, never late • Hear yourself snore — recordings kept on your phone, deleted after a week • Bedroom noise — how loud your room actually was, and which minutes stood out • 17 sounds for falling asleep, all playing offline, with a fade-out timer • Bedtime regularity, sleep debt and weekday-versus-weekend comparisons • Apple Health — reads nights from your Apple Watch, writes back the nights it tracks NO ACCOUNT. NO SERVER. NOTHING UPLOADED. There is nothing to sign up for, because there is nowhere to sign up to. Your sleep history lives on your phone and in Apple Health. Sound recordings never leave the device and are deleted after seven nights. Export everything to a file whenever you like. It is readable without Rested Well and explains its own format, so your history stays yours even if you stop using the app. Rested Well is iPhone only.
