Magnetometer shows you the magnetic field your phone can already sense. Calibrate a local baseline, then watch how far the field moves away from it — live, in microtesla (µT). How it reads • The big number is deviation from your calibrated baseline in µT, not an absolute field value • An arc gauge moves through four states: Weak, Moderate, Strong and Peak • A rolling waveform shows how the field changed over the last few seconds • Raw X, Y and Z components are listed under the gauge in µT Peaks you can feel • A local peak — a rise followed by a fall — triggers a full-screen flash and haptic feedback • A beep repeats faster and gets louder as the signal gets stronger, so you can watch where the phone is instead of the screen Control the measurement • Calibration establishes your local baseline and rates it: Excellent, Good, Fair or Poor • Four sensitivity levels change how strongly the normalized signal is scaled • High Precision filters noise harder — stronger smoothing, a stricter peak threshold and a longer debounce. Fewer false peaks and a slightly slower response; it does not amplify the signal • Stop a scan yourself and it is saved as a summary: peak count, duration, mode and calibration quality. Up to 100 summaries stay on your device Where people use a magnetometer • Checking whether a screwdriver, scissors or a tool tip has become magnetised • Comparing how strong different fridge magnets, speaker magnets or clasps are • Seeing how the field around a running motor, speaker or appliance changes with distance • Finding out whether a phone case, wallet or stand contains a magnet • Physics homework and classroom demonstrations that need a live µT reading • Simply seeing what the magnetic sensor inside your phone actually reports What makes this magnetometer different Most apps show one absolute number and leave you guessing whether it is high. This one asks you to calibrate where you are standing first, then reports the deviation from that baseline — so the reading answers "how much did the field change here" instead of "what is the field somewhere on Earth". The waveform, the four strength states and the peak flash all describe the same measured signal, and the app is explicit about what it cannot tell you. Getting a clean reading • Calibrate away from metal, magnets and electronics • Move the phone slowly and steadily • Take off cases that contain metal or magnets • Recalibrate when you move to a different room or surface What this app does not do Magnetometer reports what the sensor reads. It cannot tell you what caused a reading, and it does not identify magnetic sources, objects, materials or where they are. It is not a stud finder, a wall scanner or a metal detector, and it makes no claim about anything behind a wall or any other surface. Readings depend on your device's magnetometer and on nearby interference — treat them as a relative guide, not as a professional measuring instrument or a structural inspection tool. Your measurement summaries stay on this device. Requires a device with a built-in magnetometer. Available in 33 languages. Some of the features described require a subscription. Magnetometer+ turns your iPhone's magnetic sensor into a metal detector and stud finder for iron and steel hidden in walls, floors and furniture, and shows the magnetic field around you in µT. ▶ WHAT IT FINDS — AND WHAT IT DOES NOT It detects ferrous metal: screws and nails in studs and joists, steel pipes, rebar, hinges, brackets and door strikes. The range is a few centimetres, so hold the phone against the surface and sweep slowly. It cannot detect gold, silver, copper, aluminium, wood or plastic. Those materials are not magnetic, and no phone sensor can find them. If you are looking for buried coins or copper wiring, this is not the tool. ▶ CALIBRATES FROM YOUR HAND Every phone's magnetic sensor carries a large built-in offset from its own speaker and battery magnets. Magnetometer+ learns that offset while you turn the phone, so tilting the phone does not look like metal. When the meter opens, a progress bar shows how far calibration has come: turn the phone slowly in every direction, and when the bar is full the reading goes live with a short vibration. Zero here re-learns it wherever you are. ▶ THREE METER MODES • Auto — a radial gauge of the field deviation • Earth Field — total field strength with a latitude band (low, normal, elevated, high) • Metal Detector — deviation from the background field with an intensity verdict, plus optional vibration pulses that quicken as you get closer ▶ SCANNER AND STUD FINDER The Scanner tab has a metal scanner for sweeping a surface and a Stud Finder that marks the strongest point as you slide the phone flat across a wall. It finds the nails and screws that hold drywall to the studs; it does not see the wood itself. ▶ COMPASS A compass with magnetic north or true north and the local declination. ▶ LIVE DATA • X, Y and Z field components on a live chart • Min, average, max and peak with elapsed time • Sensitivity from 0.5x to 2.0x • µT, mT and Gauss units ▶ HISTORY AND EXPORT • Readings are saved with a 7-day trend and a plain-language comparison • Favourites and side-by-side comparison of two readings • Continuous one-second logging with CSV export • Share a reading as an image, optional GPS tag on saved readings • Statistics report, unlocked for 24 hours by watching a short ad USEFUL FOR DIY AND RENOVATION · FINDING STUDS AND JOISTS · CHECKING FOR REBAR OR PIPES BEFORE DRILLING · PHYSICS CLASS AND MAGNET EXPERIMENTS
