PhosphorCW โ Morse Code Decoder Decode CW (Morse code) signals in real time using your iPhone or iPad's microphone. PhosphorCW listens to radio audio and prints decoded text on screen with the warm glow of a vintage phosphor terminal. REAL-TIME DECODING Point your device at a radio speaker or feed audio via a line-in adapter. PhosphorCW's DSP engine continuously processes the audio stream, detecting CW tones and decoding them into readable text as they arrive. Characters appear on a teleprinter-style display that scrolls automatically, just like the machines that once clattered in radio rooms and newsrooms worldwide. AUTOMATIC SIGNAL TRACKING โข Auto Frequency (AFC) โ Automatically finds and locks onto the CW sidetone using FFT peak detection. No need to know the exact tone frequency. The tracker adapts as conditions change. โข Auto Speed โ Measures dit and dah timing to determine sending speed in words per minute. Adapts continuously from around 5 to 60 WPM as the operator's speed varies. Both can be switched to manual mode for fixed-frequency or fixed-speed operation. ON-DEVICE DSP ENGINE All signal processing happens locally on your device. Nothing is recorded, transmitted, or stored externally. The decoding pipeline includes: Bandpass filtering centred on the detected tone frequency Goertzel-based tone detection with adaptive noise floor tracking Envelope extraction with slow-decay peak tracking for reliable squelch Adaptive timing estimation for dit/dah discrimination and character/word gap detection Full ITU Morse code table including prosigns SIGNAL ANALYSIS A dedicated signal view provides: Live FFT spectrum display showing the audio frequency content Scrolling waterfall display for visualising signal activity over time Tone level indicator Real-time WPM, tone frequency, and SNR readout Lock status indicator showing when AFC has acquired a signal DISPLAY Choose from multiple phosphor colour themes โ green, amber, white, and blue โ inspired by the CRT terminals of the Cold War era. Adjustable decoder font size. Text selection enabled for copying decoded output. SESSION LOG Each decoding session is automatically logged with timestamp, duration, character count, WPM, and tone frequency. Review past sessions and their decoded text at any time. CONFIGURATION Input gain control (0.1x to 20x) Auto/manual frequency detection (300โ1500 Hz range) Auto/manual speed tracking (5โ60 WPM) Colour theme selection Font size adjustment USE CASES Monitor amateur radio CW transmissions Practice copying Morse code from on-air signals Decode CW practice recordings and training files Analyse CW signal characteristics Learn Morse code by watching the decoder work ABOUT CW Continuous Wave โ the original digital mode. Samuel Morse's code has been the universal language of radio since the 1840s. From clipper ships to Cold War submarines, from Bletchley Park to amateur radio contests, CW remains the most efficient and reliable communications mode ever devised. This app decodes it from your microphone or line input. Requires microphone access for audio input. iOS 18.0 or later.
SimpleFT8
This app enables ham radio operators to send and receive digital signals using FT8 and FT4 modes. It facilitates long-distance communication even in challenging conditions, allowing for local logging and optional global propagation mapping.
- Live decode table
- Slot-aligned transmitter with QSO composer
- Built-in waterfall display
- Local QSO logbook with ADIF export
- Map of decoded stations
- Optional PSK Reporter integration

SimpleFT8 is a native macOS and iOS app for FT8 and FT4, the weak-signal digital modes used by amateur radio operators worldwide. WHAT IS FT8? FT8 is a structured digital mode for ham radio. Stations alternate transmitting and receiving in synchronized 15-second slots, exchanging compact messages over a narrow audio bandwidth. The mode decodes successfully at signal levels well below the noise floor โ operators routinely make contacts on a watt or two of power with stations on the other side of the planet. SimpleFT8 puts a real digital station in your pocket. Decode signals using your device's microphone or a USB audio interface and send replies in the next slot. The manual station and local logbook work without an account. WHAT YOU GET โข Live decode table per 15-second FT8 or 7.5-second FT4 slot โข Slot-aligned transmitter with a structured QSO composer (CQ / reply / report / RR73 / 73) โข Tap any decode to start a QSO โ the state machine handles the rest of the handshake โข Built-in waterfall display with tap-to-set TX frequency โข Local QSO logbook with search, editing, ADIF import/export, and complete native backup/restore โข Map of stations you've decoded with their Maidenhead grids SIMPLEFT8 FREE Free includes unlimited FT8/FT4 receive, waterfall and decode history; microphone and USB audio; manual CQ, reply and complete QSO exchanges; all TX safety controls; local logging and full portable ADIF import/export; and the basic community map. SIMPLEFT8 PRO โ ONE-TIME LIFETIME UNLOCK Pro adds automatic replies, custom-message looping, CAT/PTT rig control, macOS System Audio capture, autonomous band hopping, advanced export scopes, direct QRZ Logbook transfer, and private iCloud log sync. No subscription. Customers who bought SimpleFT8 before it became Free receive Pro automatically. PSK REPORTER + PRESENCE (OPT-IN) If you turn it on in Settings: โข Decode reports forwarded to PSK Reporter so you contribute to the global propagation map (rate-limited server-side) โข See who heard you in the last 15 minutes, plotted on the map โข See other SimpleFT8 operators currently online, on the same map Both toggles are off by default. QRZ transfer and private iCloud log sync are also separately configured and off by default. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT โข Native Swift/SwiftUI โ no Electron, no Qt port. Looks and feels like a Mac/iOS app should. โข Pro System Audio capture on macOS via ScreenCaptureKit โ decode straight from SDR software, WebSDR, or any audio your machine is playing, without a virtual cable. โข Random caller selection rather than first-come โ every station in a pile-up has an equal shot at being picked. โข Opinionated QSO state machine handles slot parity, role alternation, and protocol step transitions so you don't have to fight the radio. PRIVACY The app is foreground-only on iOS โ the mic stops when the app goes to background. macOS keeps audio I/O alive (long FT8 sessions are the norm). Optional community and logbook integrations are clearly opt-in. No analytics, no tracking, no ads, and no subscription. Built by a ham operator for ham operators. 73 de PD3BAL.

Verdict
The clearest difference is price: SimpleFT8 at Free against PhosphorCW's $0.99. SimpleFT8 also leads on update cadence (every 3 days vs every 7 months) and device support (3 vs 1). PhosphorCW's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 1). On ads there is nothing between them.
