About

Where Was I

You fall asleep listening and you wake up two hours past the last thing you remember. The bookmark in your audiobook app is wherever the audio happened to be, not where you stopped taking any of it in, so the morning starts with scrubbing backwards and guessing. Where Was I holds the spot instead. It is a sleep timer that checks in with you rather than counting down, and it pauses the moment you stop answering. HOW A NIGHT GOES 1. Choose how often it should check in: 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes, or type your own. 2. Start your audiobook, podcast or music, then tap Start Tonight and leave Where Was I on screen. 3. Every so often you get a soft chime and a quiet voice asking "Still there?" 4. Tap, move the phone, or say you are still here. Any of the three counts as an answer. 5. Miss one and your audio pauses right there, at the minute you actually went under. NO EARBUDS NEEDED Some fall-asleep pause features only work if you are wearing earbuds. This one runs off the phone you already have. The audiobook on the nightstand speaker, the podcast playing in the background, the music you send to the bedroom, all of it pauses the same way. IT WORKS WITH THE APP YOU ALREADY USE It needs no setup and no account. Where Was I never reads, stores or computes another app's playback position. It pauses playback the way a phone call does, and your own app keeps its own bookmark exactly as it always has. YOU DECIDE HOW IT ASKS Voice and chime, voice only, or chime only. Two lines to pick from and two voices. Set the response window anywhere from 10 to 45 seconds. Turn the spoken answer off and a tap or a bit of movement still counts, which is why a first-run user is never asked for the microphone. NOTHING LEAVES YOUR PHONE Spoken answers are recognized on the device. Nothing you say is recorded and nothing is sent anywhere. Movement is read in the moment and never stored. It never asks you to sign in, because it has nowhere to send anything. WHAT YOU GET IN THE MORNING A receipt for the night: the minute it paused, when you started, how long it took you to drift off, and how many soft check-ins you answered along the way. Open your player, press play, and the place is right. Where Was I Plus is an auto-renewing subscription: $2.99 per week, or $19.99 per year. Eligible new subscribers get the first 7 days of the annual plan free. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. A subscription renews automatically unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel in your App Store account settings.
