ELEVATOR MECHANIC PREP: PASS YOUR STATE LICENSING EXAM Elevator mechanic licensing exams test ASME A17.1 Safety Code, NEC electrical requirements, OSHA standards, and mechanical systems. Candidates who fail are most often weak on ASME A17.1 code specifics, electrical theory, and safety device testing intervals. TRACTION VS HYDRAULIC COMPARISON Traction elevator: steel ropes and traction sheave driven by electric motor. Geared traction uses a gearbox (slower speeds). Gearless traction for high-rise and high-speed. Counterweight reduces motor load. Safety devices: governor, safeties, buffers, final limit switches. No practical speed limit, suitable for high-rise. Hydraulic elevator: pump, jack, and oil push the car up. Gravity controls lowering. Types: in-ground direct acting, above-ground holeless, roped hydraulic. Safety devices: lowering valve, pressure relief valve, rupture valve, cylinder leak detector. Maximum practical travel approximately 50 feet, not suitable for high-rise. ASME A17.1 CODE REFERENCE Pit: minimum 2 feet deep for traction, lighting at top of ladder, stop switch within 2 feet, ladder required if pit exceeds 35 inches. Machine room: minimum 7-foot headroom, temperature 50 to 90 degrees F, disconnect switch within sight of equipment. Hoistway: fire-resistive construction, no combustible materials. Inspection intervals: periodic inspection annually, no-load safety test every 5 years, full-load safety test every 5 years, governor and rope gripper test every 5 years. SAFETY DEVICE GUIDE Governor: centrifugal, activates when car speed exceeds set overspeed, trips the safety, tested annually. Car safety: grips guide rails to stop car in overspeed or free fall. Instantaneous (lower speeds) or progressive (higher speeds). Buffer: absorbs energy at end of travel. Oil buffers (traction), spring buffers (hydraulic). Door interlock: prevents movement unless hoistway door is locked. Pit stop switch: breaks control circuit, within reach from pit ladder. 1,000+ PRACTICE QUESTIONS ELECTRICAL THEORY AND NEC (30%): Three-phase power, motor theory, motor control circuits, NEC Article 620, grounding and bonding, branch circuits, disconnect means, GFCIs in machine rooms. ASME A17.1 CODE (25%): Pit, machine room, and hoistway requirements, car enclosure, inspection and test intervals, emergency operation, accessibility requirements. MECHANICAL SYSTEMS (25%): Traction components (sheave, ropes, counterweight, car frame, guide rails), hydraulic components (pump, jack, valve, cylinder), brake systems, lubrication. SAFETY DEVICES (10%): Governor function and overspeed settings, safety types, buffer types, door interlock operation, testing intervals. OSHA AND SAFETY (10%): OSHA 1926 Subpart R, general industry, lockout/tagout, fall protection in hoistways, confined space for pits. Every question includes a detailed explanation with ASME A17.1 and NEC section references. FREE: 5 questions per day, traction vs hydraulic comparison, safety device overview. No account required. MONTHLY ($9.99/month): Full 1,000+ questions, Traction vs Hydraulic Comparison, ASME A17.1 Code Reference, Safety Device Guide, reference library, exam simulator, 3-day free trial. Getting into the elevator constructor apprenticeship takes two things: clearing the EIAT, and then scoring well in the interview that actually decides your rank. EIAT Prep trains for both. THE TEST, IN ITS REAL FORMAT • 10 full-length practice tests, 100 questions each: Reading 35 · Mechanical 35 · Math 30 — the shape NEIEP publishes • Reading is fill-in-the-blank (cloze), like the real test — not passage-and-questions • Mechanical items are illustrated, 3 options each: gears, pulleys, levers, hydraulics, springs and more • Math has 5 options, the last always "No answer" • No test repeats a question from another • Untimed, with an optional pace clock — NEIEP does not publish a time limit, so we don't invent one DRILLS THAT FIND YOUR WEAK SPOTS • Section drills with the answer and explanation after every question • Drill by topic — fractions, ratios, belt drives, block and tackle, vocabulary in context and more • A missed-question drill that builds itself from what you got wrong • Results by section against the 70% pass line THE INTERVIEW — THE PART THAT RANKS YOU • AI mock interview: an AI plays the two-person JAC panel, asks 8 questions in a real panel's order, follows up when an answer is thin, then scores you 1–5 on commitment, mechanical background, safety, reliability, taking direction and communication — with a note on every answer • 100 practice questions written the way a JAC panel questions an applicant: hoistway safety, working as a mechanic's helper, installs vs. mod vs. service, heights and pits, travel and hours, on-the-job scenarios • For every question: why the panel asks it, what a complete answer covers, and the answer that loses points • Write your own answer and get AI feedback on what it covers and what's thin (Pro) • What NEIEP actually publishes about the interview and the tool assessment — and what it doesn't AI TUTOR • Stuck on a question? Tap "Ask the tutor" under any explanation and get it worked step by step • Ask about gears, levers, fractions, ratios, cloze reading — anything on the test (3 free a day, unlimited with Pro) TOOLBOX — FREE • Study guides for every section: gears, levers, pulleys, springs, hydraulics; fractions, ratios, algebra and how "No answer" works; how cloze reading works — each with a worked example • 70 tool flashcards for the interview's tool assessment • Free calculators: car speed, counterweight, hydraulic jack, mechanical advantage, Ohm's law, unit converter, fraction calculator and an hours log YOUR RECRUITMENT WINDOW • All 82 NEIEP recruitment areas, checked against NEIEP's published list • Reminders 7 days before your window opens, the day before, when it opens, and the day before it closes (once NEIEP publishes your area's dates) • Optional email the day NEIEP publishes new dates • Links to each IUEC local's official website, checked one by one • A Question of the Day every morning to keep you sharp FREE: Practice Test 1, a drill per section every day, one AI mock interview, 3 tutor questions a day, a sample of the interview bank, the study guides, flashcards and every calculator. PRO: all 10 tests, unlimited and topic drills, the missed-question drill, the unlimited AI tutor, unlimited AI mock interviews, and the full interview bank with AI feedback.
