Sun Compass
Read full descriptionHide full description
Your exact GPS coordinates, a true compass heading, and the sun's position for the spot you are standing on β all on one screen, all read straight from your iPhone's own sensors. Most compass apps stop at a needle. This one is built like an instrument: latitude and longitude in DD, DMS or DDM, barometric altitude, speed, true and magnetic heading with declination, live accuracy in metres, and an astronomical sun calculator that runs entirely on device. The core readings keep working with no signal β GPS, compass and barometer do not need the internet. WHAT YOU GET - Read your precise position in DD, DMS or DDM, copy it to the clipboard, and send it to anyone as a tappable map link in two taps - Know exactly which way you are facing with a smooth compass rose showing true heading, magnetic heading and declination - See where the sun is right now β solar altitude, azimuth, sunrise and sunset calculated for your exact coordinates and date - Check your elevation from the barometer, plus speed and horizontal and vertical accuracy, on a full instrument panel - Record a walk, hike or drive as a route with live distance and time, then replay the finished track on the map - Drop named waypoints with notes and watch the live distance to each one change as you move PERFECT FOR - Hikers, trail runners and campers who need elevation, heading and a marked way back - Photographers and gardeners planning around sunrise, sunset and where the light will fall - Travellers and road trippers who want a log of where they have been and a fast way to share a pin - Anyone who has to give a driver, a friend or a rescue service an exact coordinate instead of a vague address WHY NOT JUST USE THE BUILT-IN COMPASS APP? It shows a heading and a rough coordinate, and that is the end of it. There is no solar altitude or azimuth, no saved waypoints, no recorded route with replay, no barometric instrument panel, no area measurement, and no way to hand someone a clean location card. Everything here sits in one place, formatted the way navigators actually read it. A NOTE ON ACCURACY Readings come from consumer iPhone GPS and sensors. They are excellent for hiking, travel and everyday orientation, but they are not survey-grade or aviation-grade, and the app should not be your only tool in a genuine emergency. PRIVACY Your coordinates, routes, waypoints and history are stored on your device and nowhere else. No account, no sign-up, no ads, no cloud sync, no tracking. The only network request is the optional weather lookup, which sends your coordinates to the weather provider when you open the Weather screen. FULL ACCESS Full Access unlocks unlimited waypoints (three are free), route recording with map replay, live weather for your position, satellite and hybrid map styles, the two-point distance calculator, the flight seat guide, field area measurement on the map, and the shareable location card. It is available as a weekly subscription, a yearly subscription, or a one-time lifetime purchase β choose one at the paywall and everything unlocks instantly. Open the app, allow location once, and your coordinates, heading and sun times are on screen before you take your first step. Sunlit

Stand where you will shoot, point your iPhone at the sky, and see exactly where the sun and the moon will be at any hour of any day. All of it computed on the device, with no account, and every calculation offline. FOUR VIEWS, ONE PLACE AND DATE Sky. The background is a readout, not decoration: it comes from the real solar altitude at that moment, so night is navy, twilight violet, noon pale blue. The day's arc crosses it with the sun and the moon at their true positions. Drag the time scrubber and the whole screen moves through the day, with azimuth, altitude, the next event and its countdown below. AR. Hold the phone up and the sun and moon paths lie over the live camera, marked hour by hour, with the summer solstice, winter solstice and equinox paths behind them. In August you can see where the light falls in December. When the sky is dark enough, the galactic plane of the Milky Way joins them. A chip in the corner gives the heading accuracy in degrees and turns amber when the compass needs calibrating. Naming that uncertainty is part of the tool. Map. Sunrise and sunset direction rays from the pin, the moon's rays beside them, the day's path over the terrain, and the shadow of an object whose height you set. Tap anywhere and every other view follows. Data. All three twilights: civil, nautical, astronomical. Solar noon, day length, and how much the day grew or shrank since yesterday. A moon phase calendar. Eclipses with the circumstances at your own spot. The altitude curve across the year. Export to CSV or image. WHAT IS FREE Today, where you are standing, in all four views, free forever. Sun position and compass, the AR sun path, sunrise and sunset, all three twilights, golden hour and blue hour, solar noon, day length, shadow length, and today's UV index and irradiance as a clear sky model. SUNLIT PRO, ONE PAYMENT Not a subscription. Nothing renews. β’ Any date, past or future β’ Saved places and any point on earth β’ The moon: phase, path, rise, set, distance, calendar β’ The Milky Way: galactic centre, galactic plane, and a visibility window, with the limiting factor named when there is none β’ Annual path overlay with solstice and equinox curves β’ Your real horizon: sweep the skyline with the camera, get the sunrise and sunset you will actually see, and the periods behind the ridge β’ Eclipses with local circumstances β’ Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets β’ Event notifications β’ CSV and image export HOW ACCURATE Solar position comes from the NREL Solar Position Algorithm, accurate to 0.0003 degrees. Lunar position comes from a truncated ELP-2000/82 series, accurate to about 10 arcseconds. Rise, set and twilight times come from a numerical solver rather than an interpolation, so high latitudes and grazing events come out right, and polar day and polar night are reported as such rather than an invented time. UV index and irradiance are CLEAR SKY MODELS. They are computed from geometry and an ozone climatology, not measured, and carry that label everywhere they appear. Cloud changes what actually reaches you. PRIVACY No account. Astronomical calculations run offline; your saved plans stay on your iPhone. Google ads and Apple Maps tiles load online.
