Most flashcard apps make you choose: a good algorithm buried in an interface from 2009, or something pretty that doesn't use any special techniques. Avorio is an attempt to not make you choose. Under the hood it runs FSRS-5, the scheduling algorithm most serious memory nerds have switched to. In plain terms: it figures out roughly when you're about to forget a card and shows it to you right before that happens. You review less and remember more. That's the whole point of spaced repetition, and Avorio just does it well. It also works without a signal. The whole app runs offline, so a flight or a dead-zone train ride is study time, not lost time. If you want your decks on more than one device, there's sync — completely optional, and off by default. Nothing forces you to make an account. Making cards is usually the part people quit over, so there's AI for that. Paste your notes or a paragraph, and it'll turn them into proper cards you can actually study. Stuck on one? Ask it to explain. The on-device model keeps your stuff private; bigger cloud models are there if you want them. Already deep in Anki? Bring your .apkg files over, scheduling history included. You can also pull cards out of PDFs, Markdown, and Word docs. The cards themselves aren't just front-and-back text: - Cloze deletions for fill-in-the-blank - Image occlusion for diagrams, maps, and anatomy - Real LaTeX for math and physics - Syntax highlighting for code And because it's built natively for Mac and iPhone rather than wrapped-up web, it opens fast and doesn't chew through your battery. There's a lighter side too. You keep a daily streak, earn XP, spend it in a small shop, and a mascot reacts to how you're doing. None of it gets in the way — it's just there to make opening the app a habit instead of a chore. Share a deck with a friend using a single code, or grab a ready-made starter deck if you don't want to build from scratch. If you like tinkering, there's a sandboxed plugin system to extend things. It's a good fit if you're: - Studying for exams, or trying to keep something in your head for years - Learning a language and tired of forgetting vocab - In med school, law, or anything memorization-heavy - A developer drilling syntax and patterns - Just someone who hates relearning things they already learned Terms of Use (EULA): https://www.avorio.ai/legal/eula Privacy Policy: https://www.avorio.ai/legal/privacy
Rewise
Read full descriptionHide full description
Remember it right before you forget it. Rewise turns the most current spaced-repetition science into the fastest way to study on iPhone. Medicine, exams, languages. It ends "there is too much to memorise" with actual science. Why do you forget it after all that work? Because the interval between reviews does not match your forgetting curve. The FSRS scheduler predicts the moment you are about to forget and asks you then. Set your target retention anywhere from 70% to 97%. Fewer reviews, deeper retention. How much longer is today going to take? Every answer button tells you when the card comes back — tomorrow, in 3 days, in 10 days — so you can see the end of it. When today runs out, "Study all now" adds more without disturbing the schedule. Isn't making the cards the part that kills the habit? Point it at a photo, a PDF or pasted text and it drafts the questions and answers for you, entirely on the device. Flashcard packages (.apkg / .colpkg, exported with legacy support enabled) and CSV files import directly. Everything is processed on the device and we run no servers of our own. Your cards leave the phone only if you turn on iCloud sync yourself. Is there only one way to memorise something? Basic cards, cloze deletion, image occlusion that lifts one mask at a time, and multiple choice. Red sheet mode (free) writes the answer in red under a see-through red sheet; slide it down to check yourself. Read-aloud uses the voices already on your device, so it speaks more than 30 languages. Do I need a computer? No. Building cards, masking images, importing files — all of it finishes on the device. Turn on iCloud sync (Pro) and your iPhone and iPad stay joined, with no sync button to press. But can you actually keep it up? Study reminders, and widgets for the Home and Lock Screen. Six months of heatmap, a forecast of the workload ahead, and your real measured retention: progress you can actually see. The haptics and sounds feel good, and they can be switched off. Won't it hurt my eyes at night? There is a paper-textured screen and a warm dark mode for late sessions. Pick your app icon too. What does it cost? Free, for up to 4 decks and 300 cards. The spaced repetition itself is never rationed. Rewise Pro (subscription) lifts the card limit and opens all-device sync, image occlusion, multiple-choice, typed-answer and audio cards, read-aloud, unlimited drafted cards, six-month statistics, alternate app icons, imports, and full JSON and printable PDF export. Exporting your cards as CSV is free on every plan. Yearly is the best value and comes with a 7-day free trial. A lifetime unlock is also available for anyone who prefers not to subscribe. Verdict
Avorio and Rewise are too close to call on the numbers: across 6 compared parameters — price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases among them — neither pulls far enough ahead to decide it. What separates them is feature set and interface, not measurable difference.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Avorio sells 7 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per month and Rewise sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Avorio ships an update every 2 weeks, Rewise every 4 weeks. Both last shipped on October 31, 2026.
