"Where do I even start teaching my kids about AI?" I'm a developer, and a dad of two daughters. AI is the world my girls are growing up in — but I wasn't about to sit them in front of an open chatbot and hope for the best. Everything I found was built for adults. Nothing explained, at a child's level, what AI actually is, how to ask it good questions, and why it sometimes gets things wrong. So I built it myself. My First AI is the app my two daughters use every day. Because it was built for my own kids, it has no ads, no open-ended chat, and it collects no names, photos, or location. It's a safe first step into AI for children aged 4-10 — and peace of mind for the parent watching over their shoulder. ▶ Magic Drawing — imagination into pictures Kids pick who / what / where blocks to build a sentence, and the AI draws it. By comparing a "vague" request with a "detailed" one, they naturally learn how to ask well (prompting). It's the first moment your child says "whoa" — and the lesson that stays with them longest. ▶ Daily missions with an AI friend A kind AI friend greets your child each day with a short note. Kids complete missions built on five pillars — Understand, Ask, Create, Protect, Verify — growing real digital thinking skills. Ten minutes a day is enough. ▶ "AI can be wrong" — safety education Spot-the-mistake quizzes, protecting personal information, telling real from fake. The critical thinking and safety habits kids need in the AI era, made fun. This is the part I most wanted my own daughters to learn. ▶ Built for parents' peace of mind (a dad's ground rules) • Zero ads — purchases and external links sit behind a parent lock (math gate) • No login, no account — no names, photos, or location; only an anonymous device ID • No open chat — a parent should be able to predict what their child and the AI exchange • Minimal data — speech is bundled on-device for offline playback (nothing transmitted); children's inputs are pseudonymized • Built to comply with COPPA and child-directed policies ▶ Start with no pressure Free magic credits are refilled every day, so missions and play keep going without paying. Parents can choose more from the Parent Area if they want to. The first AI I wanted to give my daughters — now for your child, too. What is AI

What is AI turns artificial intelligence into short play sessions for the whole family: learn by playing, not by reading. Ember is a glowing spirit that lives inside devices. Ember knows nothing at first: your child shows Ember examples, Ember guesses, and Ember's glow turns from grey to green when the guess is right. The child is the teacher, not the audience. EVERY LESSON IS 8–10 MINUTES, IN 5 STEPS • Story — illustrated panels with audio; a child who cannot read yet can still play • Play — tap and drag only, no typing • Build — the child picks the examples, and Ember's guesses change right away • Check — 3 picture questions, with no score shown to the child • Sticker — 6 stickers unlock a badge, 24 stickers earn a certificate for the parent 24 LESSONS PER GRADE, IN 4 THEMES • People first — where AI lives, who gives the machine examples, who checks it • How machines work — seeing, hearing, sorting • AI and fairness — what to do when a guess is wrong, keeping secrets from strange apps • Design — the child invents a small job for Ember The lessons are mapped to the 4 strands and 12 AI periods a year of Hanoi's primary programme. The parent area shows which lesson covers which period. SAFE BY DESIGN • Fully offline, no connection needed to play • No ads • No sign-up, no child account, no name to type • No camera or microphone permission in the child's part of the app • No open chat box • No scores, no ranking, no comparing children • Every purchase and setting sits behind a parent PIN FOR PARENTS • See right and wrong answers per question, in the parent area only • Match each lesson to the school programme • Up to 4 children on one device • The app suggests stopping after 2 lessons per session FREE AND MEMBERSHIP Unit 1 (6 lessons) of every grade is free, with no account. Unlock everything with a single-grade or a family plan, monthly or yearly. Plans renew automatically and can be cancelled any time in your App Store settings. The simulation exists so children can see the idea: machines guess from examples that people give them. An independent learning app, not affiliated with any ministry or department of education.

Verdict
My First AI and What is AI are too close to call on the numbers: across 5 compared parameters — price, ads, in-app purchases and device support among them — neither pulls far enough ahead to decide it. What separates them is feature set and interface, not measurable difference.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. My First AI sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $6.99 per month and What is AI sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
