Readable private-key material stays on your device. β’ Mail between Thelemail accounts is encrypted end to end. β’ For outside mail, the app uses OpenPGP when a compatible key is available; otherwise, mail uses standard SMTP with TLS where supported. β’ Paid plans include unlimited aliases, subject to an anti-abuse guardrail. β’ Family plans support shared addresses without shared passwords. β’ Custom-domain setup verifies ownership and prepares DKIM, SPF, and DMARC before you change MX. β’ Mail is stored and processed in the EU. β’ Stored mail is never used for advertising or AI training. β’ Export your mailbox in standard formats using the open-source local export tool on a computer. β’ Use Face ID to unlock saved mail on supported devices. CLEAR SECURITY BOUNDARIES Email routing still exposes envelope metadata such as sender, recipient, and timing. The security model and its limits are documented at https://thelemail.com/security. Lumen is a mail app that does mail, and nothing else. No account to create, no ads, and no servers of ours in between. Your mail travels directly from this device to your mail provider; your password lives only in the system Keychain. What it does: - Receive, read, reply, archive. That's the whole feature list. - Reader mode turns cluttered newsletters into clean, readable text. - Long message? Tap Summary. Generated on your device; nothing leaves it. - Opens instantly from a local cache; the latest messages are fetched ahead of time so they're ready when you tap. - New mail arrives in real time while the app is open, with no polling. - One app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. What it doesn't do: No calendar, no to-dos, no team features, no "smart" feeds, no cloud AI of ours, no AI-written replies, no tracking pixels of our own, no analytics SDKs. This isn't a promiseβit's how the app is built. Currently supports iCloud Mail and NetEase Mail (163, 126, yeah.net, and 188). iCloud uses an app-specific password; NetEase uses an authorization code. The app walks you through getting either one.

Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Lumen Mail at none against Thelemail's 4. Thelemail's advantage is update cadence (weekly vs every 3 weeks) and iOS requirement (15.0 vs 17.0). On price, ads and device support there is nothing between them.
