About

Word Hook

Word Hook helps you learn Spanish vocabulary with a memory technique: each Spanish word gets hooked to an English word you already know. You start with the 1000 most common words in Mexican Spanish, the ones you'll read and hear most. No ads Β· No account Β· Works offline Β· No subscription Ever memorize a Spanish word and lose it two days later? Your brain drops loose facts fast, but it holds on to the scenes it sees in your mind. That's why words here come with a scene. HOW IT WORKS Most words have a "hook": an English word you already know that looks or sounds like the Spanish word. "dormir" is pronounced "dohr-MEER" and brings DORM to mind. A short story joins the hook and the meaning in one scene: "Dorm roommates snore, so nobody can sleep." The picture puts that scene right in front of you. Next time you see "dormir," it all clicks into place: dormir β†’ dorm β†’ sleep. After a few reviews, you won't need the hook at all. This is called the keyword method. In a classic Stanford University study (Atkinson & Raugh, 1975), people who used it remembered far more words than people who studied without it. WHY IT WORKS β€’ Your brain stores something new more easily when it's linked to something it already knows. β€’ A scene you picture lasts much longer than a word you drilled. β€’ Spaced repetition brings each word back just before you'd forget it: the next day, after 3 days, after a week, after a month. Remember it and the next review moves further out; forget it and it comes back the next day. WHAT'S INSIDE β€’ The 1000 most common Spanish words: with them you understand about 75% of the words in everyday texts and conversations β€’ Cards with the hook, story, picture and an example sentence with its English translation; each card opens step by step β€’ Written pronunciation and Spanish audio for every word and example sentence β€’ Today's words: tap the ones you already know and new ones take their place β€’ Daily review; if you're stuck, tap "See the hook" β€’ Tests: Simple test, Mixed test (meaning, listening, picture, fill in the blank, true or false, build the word and the sentence), Match, a 60-second Timed round, Letter wheel and The ones you miss β€’ My words: what you've learned and what you already knew, searchable by word or meaning β€’ Review reminder: at most one a day β€’ Day streak and progress for every word WHO IT'S FOR β€’ Anyone starting Spanish from scratch or at a beginner level β€’ Anyone who took Spanish years ago and wants the vocabulary back β€’ Anyone who wants solid basics before moving on If your Spanish is already advanced, you probably know most of these words. Try the free words first. 10-15 MINUTES A DAY IS ENOUGH A little every day works much better than a lot once a week. In the free version you learn 5 new words a day; with the pack you pick 10, 15 or 20. 20 FREE WORDS, NO SUBSCRIPTION The first 20 words you learn are free, with no time limit. For the rest, you buy the pack once: pay once and it's yours for good. No monthly or yearly subscription. New phone? Get your purchase back with "I already bought it." NO ADS, NO ACCOUNT No ads, no sign-up. The cards and pictures download once, when you pick the language; after that everything works offline and your progress stays on your phone. See a card that doesn't feel right? Write to info@kelimekancasi.com. The word list is built from frequency lists of everyday Spanish. Most words that are almost the same in English (like hotel or animal) were left out, and the next most common words took their place.
