Press the pedal and the engine roars for real. Just move your finger and 28 different engines come alive — from a 660cc turbo kei car to a W16 hypercar, all the way to a racing V10 that screams to 19,000 rpm. It's a new kind of toy you can just pick up and play. No complicated setup. Drag across the screen and feel how good a good engine sounds. SIMPLE TO PLAY, DEEP IF YOU WANT IT - 28 engine sounds: V-twin, turbo kei car (660cc), inline-4, inline-5, inline-6, boxer-4, flat-6, V6, cross-plane and flat-plane V8s, V10, V12, W16, and a racing V10 to 19,000 rpm - A throttle that reacts to exactly how hard you press: ease in for a soft idle, floor it for a full-throttle scream - Every sound is made live, not a recording on loop — so the same rev never sounds exactly the same twice - Straight-pipe mode in the chassis tuning screen: open up the exhaust for more pops and bangs on lift-off - Haptics that pulse with the revs, so you feel the engine in your hand - Color RPM gauge with a rev-limiter cutout FOR CAR PEOPLE, THERE'S MORE - An H-pattern shifter (switch to paddles anytime) so you change gears yourself - Practice rev-matching: brake, blip the throttle, shift. Nail it and it's smooth; botch it and you feel the driveline thump - Per-cylinder firing and uneven exhaust timing keep it from ever sounding like a loop - Tune each engine: spend miles earned by driving on mufflers, intakes, headers, superchargers, cams and ECU maps, and see your 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time, top speed and torque change on the spot - Chassis tuning shared across every engine: weight reduction, aero and a lighter flywheel - A Parts Crate for extra parts, with the odds shown in the app - Garage miles keep accruing even while the app is closed - A Pit Stop summary after every drive: distance, miles earned, and any personal bests - Daily tasks, a login bonus, and achievements you can trade in for perks - Game Center leaderboards for top speed and 0–100 km/h - Invite friends with a referral code for bonus miles WHO IT'S FOR - Anyone who loves engine and car sounds - Anyone who wants a bit of fun tinkering with a car while waiting or on the go - Fans curious what a V12 or flat-6 sounds like without owning one - Drivers who want to practice rev-matching before getting behind the wheel AVAILABILITY You start with the inline-4 and every core feature, with no ads on the driving screen. Driving earns miles that unlock the remaining engines and parts through the unlock tree. The next unowned V6, V8 or V12 engine can be rented for 10 minutes after a short video ad, and straight-pipe mode can be unlocked for 24 hours the same way. An optional one-time purchase removes the full-screen ads shown between engine switches; rentals, straight-pipe trials and mile rewards stay available either way. No subscriptions. Tip: headphones or earphones bring out the fine detail in every sound.

A simulated engine on a dyno, run by a standalone ECU you tune yourself. Change the fuel map, the timing or the boost and watch what happens to the power curve, the mixture and the knock sensor. It behaves like the real thing. The engine model runs every combustion event. Lean it out and it misfires. Add too much timing and it knocks, then cracks a piston. Fit bigger injectors without telling the ECU and it floods. THE ECU - Fuel VE, lambda targets, ignition, boost target and wastegate duty, idle, warmup, cranking, accel enrichment and dead times - Closed loop, knock control, rev and boost limiters, auto learn and "Fix from pull" - Select cells, drag curves, type values, interpolate and smooth, in a grid or in 3D - Lay the data log over any table and see which cells ran lean or knocked THE ENGINES - Ten engines: fours, a flat four, straight sixes, V6s and V8s - Naturally aspirated, turbo, twin turbo, supercharged and nitrous - Nearly 100 parts: injectors, pumps, lines, regulators, turbos, housings, wastegates, blowers, cams, pistons, rods, head gaskets and fuels, E85 included THE DYNO - Hold any rpm at any throttle, or do a full wide open throttle pull - Power, torque, mixture, boost and timing on every run - A full data log you can zoom into - Engine health: knock, over-revving, boost and heat all wear parts out, and some failures are sudden CAREER MODE Start with a rented unit, a small dyno, a stock project car and $1,500. Customers bring in cars with vacuum leaks, tired fuel pumps, stuck wastegates, burnt valves and lying sensors, or ask for a power target on a budget. Find the fault, fix it, tune it and hand it back for a test drive that grades your work. - Eleven kinds of job, from base tunes to E85 conversions, race class builds, blown engine rescues and cars three other shops couldn't fix - Four rival shops with owners and an 8-week season. Beat them at Dyno Day and their customers switch to you - Cars come back weeks later. A tune too close to the edge breaks on a hot day and returns on warranty; a safe one turns the customer into a regular - Intermittent faults that only show hot, cold, under boost or near redline - Eight story customers who bring the same car back chapter after chapter, with your parts and tune still on it - Diagnostic tools, a bigger dyno, more bays, weather, deadlines, rent and 31 achievements DAILY CHALLENGE One broken engine a day, the same for every player. Nine hours on the clock to find the faults and tune it, then see where you land on the leaderboard. Tuesdays and Saturdays are free on the Turbo Four. LEARN A guided tutorial takes a broken project car from flooding on the stand to a full tune. Twelve more lessons cover VE tuning, MBT, knock, boost control, injector swaps, fuel system limits, E85, nitrous, big cam idle and cold starts. GAME CENTER Leaderboards for the daily challenge, peak horsepower and horsepower per litre. A pull only counts if the engine is still alive five seconds later. FREE AND PRO The Turbo Four, the guided tutorial and the Tuesday and Saturday daily challenges are free, with every part and every table. Tuning Simulator Pro is a one-time purchase that unlocks all ten engines, custom builds, every lesson, Career mode and the daily challenge every day. No subscription, no ads, no account.

Verdict
The clearest difference is ads: Tuning Simulator at none against Engine Sim's shown. Tuning Simulator also leads on monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases) and rating (4.8 vs 4.6). Engine Sim's advantage is ratings volume (1.1K vs 8) and review sentiment (86% vs 67%). On price, update cadence, in-app purchases and chart position there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Engine Sim sells 15 one-off in-app purchases and Tuning Simulator sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Tuning Simulator holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Engine Sim has 1.1K ratings behind it against 8, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 86% of Engine Sim's written reviews are positive against 67% of Tuning Simulator's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Engine Sim ships an update every 3 days, Tuning Simulator every 2 days. The most recent releases landed on October 31, 2026 and November 1, 2026 respectively.
