StepQuest
Read full descriptionHide full description
Your hero is only alive while you keep walking. StepQuest exists to make a daily walking habit something you actually keep. Not with another streak badge or a reminder you learn to ignore, but by turning your step count into a roguelite RPG where a character's survival is the thing at stake. -= How It Works =- You pick a daily step goal, and it locks in for the whole adventure, so you set your own difficulty. Every day you hit it, your character earns XP and levels up. Every day you miss, you lose a heart. Run out of hearts and the run is over. Steps come straight from Apple Health, so there is nothing to log by hand. You walk, the game keeps score. -= Missing a Day Is Survivable, Not Free =- Six days in a row earns a rest day, and your next miss is forgiven automatically. A full seven day streak regenerates a heart. Blue hearts, earned only from the hardest quests, absorb a missed day as a last resort. Use all of it and a run can last months. Ignore it and five bad days end everything. -= Death Is Not a Reset =- When the last heart goes, your level resets, but your gold and your avatar collection are permanent. You cash out gold based on how long you survived, spend it on cosmetics, and start the next run with everything you have collected. A bad run costs you progress, never your collection. -= Your Steps Are the Currency =- More than 140 avatars across five styles: standard, casual, edgy, fantasy, and cyberpunk. Every one of them is priced in gold, and walking is what earns it. The rarest take real distance to reach, so your character ends up wearing the ground you covered. -= Quests Worth Chasing =- Daily, weekly, monthly and legendary quests. A perfect month. Half a million steps in a single run. A hundred consecutive days. -= On Your Wrist and Home Screen =- An Apple Watch app, a Watch complication, Home Screen widgets and Lock Screen widgets keep today's steps and your remaining hearts one glance away, so you always know how close the day is to costing you a heart. Raise your wrist or glance at a locked phone, no need to open the app. No accounts. No sign up. Just your steps. Disclaimer: StepQuest is free to play and shows ads. Optional in-app support tiers grant bonus gold and remove ads. Nothing you can buy affects your hearts, your step goal, or your progress.
Underfoot

Your steps already add up to something. This app decides what. Underfoot turns the steps your phone already counts into distance along a real long-distance route: the actual surveyed line, with its actual length, its actual climbs and its actual places. Walk your usual day, and you move a little further down the trail. FOUR ROUTES, ALL ON YOUR PHONE โข Appalachian Trail - 3,478 km, Georgia to Maine, 18 sections. Free, all of it. โข Pacific Crest Trail - 4,269 km, desert to the North Cascades, 20 sections. โข Route 66 - 3,643 km, Chicago to the Pacific, 20 sections. โข Camino de Santiago - 762 km across northern Spain, 7 sections. Nothing is downloaded later. Every route is in the app from the first launch, and it all works in airplane mode. PAINTED, NOT PHOTOGRAPHED 128 original paintings, one for every stretch of country you walk through, in daylight and at night. The season is baked into each one, so a year passes while you walk: early spring in Georgia, high summer in Virginia, late autumn at the end. A JOURNAL THAT BECOMES A BOOK One line a day, in your words. Along the way you pass named places: shelters with the year they were built, passes, towns, roadside stops, and find what somebody walking before you wrote there. After a year you have something you won't want to lose. SECTIONS, NOT ONE ENDLESS LINE A long trail takes years at an honest pace, so the unit that matters is the section: a month or two, ending in something. Eighteen of them on the Appalachian Trail alone. NO STREAKS, NO GUILT A day without walking is called a zero day, and on a real trail it is completely normal. Nothing here burns down, nothing scolds you, nothing asks you to come back tomorrow or lose what you built. NOTHING LEAVES YOUR DEVICE No account, no server, no analytics, no third-party code of any kind. Your steps are read from Health on your phone and stay there. Progress syncs between your own devices through your private iCloud, and nowhere else. WIDGETS One for each trail you're walking, in four sizes, including the Lock Screen. FREE AND PRO The Appalachian Trail is free in full: every section, every painting, the journal, the widget. Pro opens the rest of the catalogue, lets you walk several routes at once, writes fresh journal entries on your device, and exports your journal as a book. For motivation, not for navigation. This is not a hiking navigation app and carries no GPS guidance of any kind. Route data comes from public surveys and is credited in the app. Not affiliated with or endorsed by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the Pacific Crest Trail Association, or the National Park Service. SUBSCRIPTION DETAILS Underfoot Pro is offered as a monthly subscription (US$4.99 per month) and a yearly subscription (US$29.99 per year). Lifetime (US$59.99) is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Prices are in US dollars and may differ in other regions. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. A subscription renews automatically unless it is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the period ends. Subscriptions can be managed, and auto-renewal turned off, in your Apple Account settings after purchase. Verdict
The clearest difference is ads: Underfoot at none against StepQuest's shown. StepQuest's advantage is device support (3 vs 1) and iOS requirement (15.1 vs 26.0). On price, update cadence and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.
