CardiCalm

CardiCalm is a simple, tactile way to calm down: your phone's vibration becomes a slow, steady heartbeat that your body instinctively starts to follow. The calm rhythm helps you slow down, settle, and drift off to sleep more easily. Hold it in your palm, rest it on your chest, or slip it into your pocket, and let the steady pulse take over. Close your eyes, and simply feel it. FREE ⢠Adjustable heartbeat (40ā70 BPM) and vibration strength ⢠A real heartbeat sound in perfect sync with the pulse ā nothing to calibrate, they simply play together ⢠The sound adapts: a fuller sample through headphones, a cleaner one through the speaker ā it switches by itself when you plug in ⢠Pocket mode: black screen, minimum brightness ā put it in your pocket or on the mattress ⢠Sleep mode: the heartbeat sound keeps playing with the screen locked, all night ⢠Timer from 1 to 60 minutes, or unlimited ⢠Dark and light themes, 14 languages PRO ā one-time purchase, NO subscription ⢠Programs: calm heart, deep sleep, power nap, focus ā one tap and everything is set ⢠Custom wind-down: you choose the starting tempo, the target and how long the descent takes ⢠Haptic-guided breathing: 4-7-8, box and coherent ā followable with your eyes closed, by touch alone ⢠Personalised tempo: suggests a starting rhythm from your Apple Watch resting heart rate ⢠Save your own setups by name and recall them with one tap ⢠All future Pro features, forever GOOD TO KNOW The vibration works while the app is open ā that's exactly why pocket mode exists: with a black screen, your phone can stay in your pocket or beside your pillow. If you want it to continue with the screen locked, turn on sleep mode and the heartbeat sound carries on. iPad has no Taptic Engine, so there the heartbeat plays as sound only ā vibration needs an iPhone. PRIVACY CardiCalm does everything on your device. No account, no data collection, no ads. Your resting heart rate is read from the Health app only if you allow it ā and that data never leaves your phone. CardiCalm is a wellness app for relaxation. It is not a medical device, does not diagnose or treat any condition, and is not a substitute for medical advice. If you have health concerns, please consult a doctor.
OpenBreath

A breathing app for coherence practice: you set how long to breathe in, hold, breathe out and hold, and follow a sphere that opens and closes with the breath. Nothing is asked of you first. There is no account, no sign-in and no network ā the app makes no connection of any kind, so your practice log is on your iPhone and nowhere else. THE BREATH ⢠Presets for the usual patterns ā coherence 5.5, 4-6, 4-7-8, box 4 ā and any timing of your own. ⢠A sphere that opens as you breathe in and closes as you breathe out, as a cloud of points, bubbles, stars or a glow, in a colour you pick. ⢠Sound per phase: waves that rise and fall with the breath, a soundwave whose overtones gather and dissolve, a marker at each turn ā singing bowl, bell or metronome tick ā an mp3 of your own, or silence. The bowl and the tick are pitched by the turn they mark, so going into a breath in does not sound like going out. ⢠A singing bowl when the session ends, so you can sit with your eyes shut and not wonder whether it is over. ⢠Optional haptics at each phase change. ⢠Optional torch that brightens as you breathe in and fades as you breathe out ā the breath to follow with your eyes closed. ⢠A count in after you press start ā four seconds by default, as long as you like ā to put the phone down and shut your eyes before the first breath. ⢠Time left, a dot per breath and a breath count, each hideable for a barer screen. WHAT IT REMEMBERS ⢠Every sitting, day by day, with the pattern you breathed and the breaths you finished. The ones you cut short count too. ⢠Goals, as many as you like: one sitting a day, a hundred breaths a day, an hour a week. They are counted from the log, so a goal set today already credits the practice behind it. ⢠Streaks, totals and milestones at 3 days, a week, a month, 100 days, half a year and a year ā each said once, quietly. ⢠A backup of the lot ā log, presets and goals ā written to one file you keep and read back later. Sittings merge rather than overwrite, so importing an old backup onto a phone you have kept practising on keeps both sets. The log can only grow. FREE, AND FREE SOFTWARE No ads, no accounts, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases and nothing to unlock. OpenBreath is released under the GNU General Public License v3 or later; the source is public.

Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: OpenBreath at none against CardiCalm's 1. OpenBreath also leads on device support (3 vs 1) and iOS requirement (15.0 vs 17.0). On price and ads there is nothing between them.
