PulseStar
Read full descriptionHide full description
PulseStar is a free VPN client for employees of organizations using managed server infrastructure. A profile from your organization’s administrator is required to connect. Organizations separately pay for infrastructure deployment, configuration and maintenance services; employees do not buy subscriptions, access codes or individual app licenses. QR codes, codes and files provide connection configuration and authorization, not purchases of app features. Features: • Add access using a QR code, code or file. • Select an available server. • Automatic transport selection: TCP, then QUIC and UDP when needed. • Manual TCP, QUIC or UDP selection. • View connection status. • Access permitted local services directly using administrator-defined routing rules, while other traffic continues through the VPN. • Optional technical diagnostics to help investigate connection failures. The app is free to download and use. Available servers, access duration and limits depend on your profile and your organization’s infrastructure configuration. You can turn diagnostic reporting off in Settings. See the privacy policy for details about data processing. Arava VPN
Read full descriptionHide full description
Arava is a VPN client for your own servers or the provider you choose. Add a configuration or subscription and connect through an encrypted tunnel. Arava does not include a VPN subscription or require an Arava account. SETUP Import a subscription link, scan a configuration QR code, or import a file. Supported configuration formats include sing-box JSON and WireGuard / AmneziaWG configuration files. CONNECTION Choose a server manually or use Auto. Supported protocols include Hysteria2, VLESS + Reality, and WireGuard / AmneziaWG. Subscription updates help keep your server list current. DNS The engine resolves client domains through Google DNS over HTTPS inside the VPN. If that connection fails, it does not fall back to local client DNS. VPN server addresses may use the system resolver to establish the tunnel. PRIVACY No advertising or analytics SDKs. Configuration credentials are stored in the device's encrypted system storage. Device identifiers and server-location requests go to the subscription provider, as described in the privacy policy. Your provider handles VPN traffic; Google handles tunneled DNS requests. You need a compatible configuration from your own server or a VPN provider.

Verdict
The clearest difference is update cadence: Arava VPN at every 4 days against PulseStar's fortnightly. Arava VPN also leads on iOS requirement (15.0 vs 17.0). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.
