Rapid earthquake location and magnitude verification has never been easier. Quick Quake is also a great educational tool – simply use the demo data to see how P (primary) and S (secondary) waves are used to determine the location of an earthquake. Quick Quake is an earthquake data analysis tool that allows users to quickly determine the epicentre and magnitude of an earthquake by simply picking a P wave and S wave arrival from a single seismograph, then moving the epicentre around a map until the seismograms from the other stations line up in time. The Seismology Research Centre has developed Quick Quake so that users of the Quake Server seismic observatory data management system can quickly verify the automatic event notifications that Quake Server sends out by email. The traditional method of locating earthquakes can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes, but with Quick Quake you can verify or refine the automatic eqServer location and magnitude in less than a minute. How to use Quick Quake with the demo data: • Select which station you wish to use to pick a P and S wave (the “key site”) and hit the target icon • Drag the P (primary wave) marker to the right until it aligns with the first signal that you can see above the background noise • Drag the S (secondary wave) marker to the left until it aligns with the significant increase in signal level (see the screenshots as a guide) • Pinch to zoom the time and amplitude scale if you need better resolution • Continue to the locating screen, where you can drag the target around the circle until the waveforms on the left of the screen roughly align with the P and S travel time guide lines It’s that simple. The solution should work no matter which station you choose, but the closer the station the easier the P and S wave arrival times will be to pick. If you have an Quake Server, just log in using your credentials and the server's IP address or domain name, then you can browse through recent (and past) automatic events and proceed as above. On the “Select a Key Site” screen, you can defer stations from your calculations using a left-swipe, or restore them with a right-swipe. You can also sort your stations in order of distance from the selected “key site”. On the “Locate Event” screen there is are options to adjust the P-wave and S-wave travel velocities to suit your local conditions, as well as the depth of the earthquake. The iPad version shows quick-adjustment buttons, and iPhone and iPad versions include three presets for P and S velocity “models” - now with a customisable magnitude formula. The quake meter is an app which uses the seismograph or seismometer in your phone to measure the strength of vibrations, tremors, earthquakes, and even the vibrations of the human body or any other objects around you. - High-Accuracy Seismometer: Detect vibrations from earthquakes to human movements with precision using your phone's built-in seismograph. - Seismic Wave Detection: Track seismic activities like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions using your phone’s accelerometer. - Detailed Graphical Analysis: Visualize seismic movements on graphs, displaying data across three dimensions for in-depth understanding. - Real-Time Mercalli Scale Readings: Get instant updates on ground motion intensity, with average and max values easily accessible. - Customizable MMI Chart: Tailor MMI charts to display seismic data over your chosen time frames for personalized insights. - Instant Alerts for Seismic Shocks: Stay informed with alerts on sudden accelerations or seismic events, keeping you prepared. - Effortless Data Autosave: Automatically save crucial seismic data in CSV format for detailed post-event analysis. - Comprehensive History Access: Review and share your seismic data history, complete with easily accessible CSV files. - Secure Cloud Storage: Safeguard your seismic data in the cloud, accessible on different devices via social accounts or email. - Apple Watch Compatibility: Seamlessly control your seismic measurements from your Apple Watch device, ensuring minimal interference. - Shareable Insights: Capture and share screenshots of your seismic findings with friends, spreading awareness and knowledge. Using the accelerometer in your phone, our app allows you to detect and record seismic waves generated by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, avalanches and any other sources of seismic activity. Once the activity is measured, the graph feature presents a record of the ground motion at the point of measurement. Any ground movement or object is presented as a function of time along three Cartesian axes, with the z- axis perpendicular to the Earth's surface and the x- and y- axes parallel to the surface. During a span of measurement, you will track average and max values and see current corresponding Mercalli scale descriptions. You can set up your app to display current acceleration, XYZ or Mercalli scale values on the main screen. What’s more, you can find a second chart on the screen with MMI values which can be customized to display different lengths if you want to see shorter or longer time periods. The app allows you to take a screenshot of the whole view to share it with friends. The alerts feature notifies you about sudden acceleration changes or seismic shocks. Go to the settings screen and setup values you want to get notified after. Autosave allows you to save your data when shocks pass through the setup threshold. You can later view the saved CSV file to see the exact measurements during that time. The history screen allows you to see your saved data with date, time, avg, and max values along with a CSV file from the whole span of measurement. You can also share the data as you please. Keep your data safe with our cloud services, which allow you to create accounts and store your data.. Log in using your social media accounts or email to different devices to see and share your data. Our app comes with a brand new application for Apple Watch devices. You can easily control your measurements with your watch without having to touch your phone. Controlling the measurements with the watch avoids interference! Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Quick Quake at none against Vibration meter's 2. Quick Quake also leads on ads (none vs shown) and iOS requirement (9.0 vs 16.0). Vibration meter's advantage is rating (4.4 vs 4.0) and update cadence (monthly vs every 6 months). On price and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Vibration meter sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month. Quick Quake asks for nothing beyond the download.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Vibration meter holds the better App Store score, 4.4 against 4.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Vibration meter has 14 ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Quick Quake ships an update every 6 months, Vibration meter monthly. The most recent releases landed on June 7, 2026 and September 22, 2026 respectively.
