FERMNTR – Brew by taste, not numbers. FERMNTR is the app I wished existed when I started brewing. It now covers the whole brew — from sketching a recipe, to brew day, to fermentation, to what's left in your inventory — without feeling like a spreadsheet. Most recipe tools want you to think in grams and IBUs from minute one. FERMNTR lets you start with what you actually want the beer to taste like — the hop character, the malt backbone, the yeast personality — and fills in the numbers as you go. The stats are all there if you want them. They're just not in the way. Not sure where to start? Just describe the beer you're after, like "a juicy hazy IPA around 6%, heavy on tropical fruit", and the AI recipe assistant builds a complete recipe for your brewery: grain bill, hops, yeast and mash. It checks the numbers against the style, can use what's already in your inventory, and follows your lead when you'd rather break the rules. Already have a recipe? Ask it to swap a hop, raise the ABV or scale up the batch, and it rebalances the rest so the beer still tastes like itself. Nothing is saved until you say so. Powered by Apple Intelligence. FERMNTR doesn't charge for it, but Apple's own terms and usage limits apply. Brew day shouldn't be a juggling act. Steps, timers, mash temps, and notes live on one screen. If you've got a Brewzilla, FERMNTR talks to it directly, so the temperature you see is the real one in the kettle. No more flipping between three apps with sticky fingers. And no more guessing what's happening in the fermenter. Connect your RAPT or TILT devices and watch gravity and temperature update in real time, or log readings by hand in a few seconds. Either way, you get clean charts and a dashboard that tells you, at a glance, which batches need attention and which are quietly doing their thing. There's a bonus for the lazy (and the forgetful): when a fermentation moves to its next step, FERMNTR can automatically retarget your temperature controller to match the plan. Fewer alarms, fewer "oops I forgot at 1am" moments. (Premium, compatible controller required.) Everything syncs across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch, with widgets so you can check a batch without even unlocking your phone. What's inside: • Sensory-first recipe builder with full stats under the hood • AI recipe assistant: describe a beer and get a full recipe, or tweak an existing one just by asking (no extra charge from FERMNTR, requires Apple Intelligence) • Guided brew day with timers, steps, and live Brewzilla integration • Fermentation tracking with RAPT, TILT, or quick manual logging • Dashboard for active batches and connected devices • Inventory so you actually know what's in the fermenter, the keg, and the cupboard • Detailed charts that don't need a manual • iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch apps with widgets on all of them • Push notifications when fermentations change state (Premium) • Auto-retarget your temperature controller as steps progress (Premium, compatible hardware required) • iCloud sync, so your brews follow you • Supports Brewzilla (gen 4 with RAPT), RAPT pill, all RAPT temperature controllers (Like Temperature Controller, Fermentation Chamber, etc) and TILT. Recipe creation for Beer, and fermentation support for beer, cider, mead, wine, or anything else that bubbles. FERMNTR won't promise medal-winning beer — that part's still on you. But it'll make the rest of it a lot less stressful. End-User License Agreement: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/

Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: Beer Styles at 4.7 against FERMNTR's 4.0. Beer Styles also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 3) and ratings volume (29 vs 1). FERMNTR's advantage is update cadence (every 11 days vs every 6 weeks). On price, review sentiment, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. FERMNTR sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month. Beer Styles asks for nothing beyond the download.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Beer Styles holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Beer Styles has 29 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 96% of Beer Styles's written reviews are positive against 100% of FERMNTR's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Beer Styles ships an update every 6 weeks, FERMNTR every 11 days. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and October 30, 2026 respectively.
