Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: mhPBX at 4.6 against FreedomPop's 3.3. FreedomPop's advantage is ratings volume (1.1K vs 17) and iOS requirement (8.2 vs 16.0). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
mhPBX holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 3.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: FreedomPop has 1.1K ratings behind it against 17, so its average is the more settled of the two.
FreedomPop ships an update every 3 months, mhPBX every 4 months. The most recent releases landed on November 6, 2026 and November 3, 2026 respectively.
