The SBIRT App for Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment for substance use provides users with detailed steps to complete an SBIRT intervention with patients or clients. The app is designed for use by physicians, other health workers, and mental health professionals and can be used with patients and clients 12 years and older. The app provides evidence-based questions to screen for alcohol, drugs and tobacco use. If warranted, a screening tool is provided to further evaluate the specific substance use. The app also provides steps to complete a brief intervention and/or referral to treatment for the patient based on motivational interviewing. Integrated within the app are three screening instruments for substance use: the CRAFFT assesses substance use in adolescents, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) assesses alcohol use in adults, and the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST) assesses drug use in the adults. The app was developed as a part of a SAMHSA-funded grant project at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM).

Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: SBIRT at none against FP Notebook's 3. SBIRT also leads on iOS requirement (12.0 vs 15.0). FP Notebook's advantage is update cadence (every 2 months vs every 55 months) and ratings volume (3.3K vs 5). On price, review sentiment, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. FP Notebook sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month. SBIRT asks for nothing beyond the download.
FP Notebook holds the better App Store score, 4.9 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: FP Notebook has 3.3K ratings behind it against 5, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 61% of FP Notebook's written reviews are positive against 67% of SBIRT's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
FP Notebook ships an update every 2 months, SBIRT every 55 months. The most recent releases landed on October 16, 2026 and October 5, 2026 respectively.
