Each exam includes 60 to 110 scored items that contribute to the final result, alongside 10 unscored pilot questions used for future test development. Candidates are allotted a maximum of 2 hours to complete the examination. The NREMT exam comprehensively covers the spectrum of EMS care, including: Scene Size-Up and Safety; Primary Assessment; Secondary Assessment; Patient Treatment and Transport; and Operations. Patient care questions are allocated with 85% focusing on adult and geriatric patients and 15% on pediatric patients. Successful completion requires candidates to meet a standard level of competency, defined as the ability to provide safe and effective entry-level emergency medical care.
