PitchSetCalc vs SetClass
Price, ratings, monetisation and update history for both apps, side by side — with what reviewers say about each.
PitchSetCalc
This music theory tool aids students and theorists in analyzing music using Set Theory. It calculates normal order, prime form, Forte number, and interval class vectors from user-inputted pitch class sets. The app also offers audio playback of entered sets as scales or simultaneities.
- Pitch class set entry via pitch wheel
- Calculates normal order
- Calculates prime form
- Calculates Forte number
- Calculates interval class vector
- Audio playback of pitch sets

PitchSetCalc is a tool for music student and theorists that will help with the analysis of music using Set Theory. This app has a simple interface and works on both iPhone and iPad with iOS 10.0 and up. To enter in a new pitch class set, the user simply touches the pitches on the pitch wheel. As the pitches are entered, the app will calculate normal order, prime form, Forte number, and the interval class vector. The pitch wheel will display the pitches using sharps or flats. When the pitches are entered, each one will sound to give the user an idea of how the pitch class set sounds. There is also a playback function which will play the set as either a scale or simultaneity.

Explore the building blocks of modern harmony. This app lets you see, hear and manipulate pitch class sets, the foundation of post-tonal and atonal music theory. EXPLORE • Tap notes on the pitch wheel to build any chord or scale. • See the Forte number, prime form, normal form and interval vector. • Check transpositional and inversional symmetry. • Open the K/Kh complex of any set to see which set classes include it or its complement. FIND • Tap notes on a keyboard, or type a Forte number (3-11, 6-Z44) or pitch-class numbers (0 4 7). • Browse all 224 Forte set classes, with Z-relations, filtered by size. TRANSFORM • Transpose, invert and multiply (M5, M7) any set. • Morph smoothly from one set to another. CREATE • Generate sets by cardinality, symmetry and density. • Arrange sets into rhythmic sequences using P, T, I, R and RI operations, with every inversion level. • Build a serial matrix from rows of 2 to 12 notes. • See each set as geometry in tonal space, with symmetry axes. • Export to MIDI and MusicXML. LEARN • A built-in theory guide. • Analysis examples from Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Berg, Messiaen and more, with links to scores. Built for students, composers and theorists, from first-time learners to advanced analysis.

Verdict
The clearest difference is update cadence: SetClass at every 2 months against PitchSetCalc's every 19 months. PitchSetCalc's advantage is price ($0.99 vs $4.99) and iOS requirement (15.0 vs 18.0). On ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.
