Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: AppDates at 100% against News Widget's 18%. AppDates also leads on rating (5.0 vs 3.6) and update cadence (every 10 days vs every 8 months). News Widget's advantage is ratings volume (36 vs 4). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.
