Simply take a picture (or select one from your photo library) and you can display it as it would appear on over forty systems including the Commodore 64, IBM PC (DOS, CGA, EGA and VGA), Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo Game Boy and even the original 1984 model Apple Macintosh. If that's not enough you can also create your own custom modes based around four different graphics engines and a wide variety of color palettes and character fonts. Verdict
The clearest difference is ads: Retrospecs at none against PIXEL86's shown. Retrospecs also leads on ratings volume (367 vs 42) and device support (3 vs 1). PIXEL86's advantage is update cadence (every 5 days vs every 2 months). On price, rating, review sentiment and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Retrospecs sells 5 one-off in-app purchases and PIXEL86 sells 2 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Retrospecs holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Retrospecs has 367 ratings behind it against 42, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 94% of Retrospecs's written reviews are positive against 100% of PIXEL86's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Retrospecs ships an update every 2 months, PIXEL86 every 5 days. The most recent releases landed on October 21, 2026 and October 27, 2026 respectively.
