Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language with about 104 million speakers, including those who speak it as a second language. It is the national language of Pakistan and is closely related to and mutually intelligible with Hindi, though a lot of Urdu vocabulary comes from Persian and Arabic, while Hindi contains more vocabulary from Sanskrit. Linguists consider Standard Urdu and Standard Hindi to be different formal registers both derived from the Khari Boli dialect, which is also known as Hindustani. Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Learn Hindi (Beginners) at 4.7 against Learn Urdu's 3.5. Learn Hindi (Beginners) also leads on update cadence (monthly vs every 12 months) and ratings volume (46 vs 4). Learn Urdu's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 9) and iOS requirement (12.0 vs 15.0). On price, review sentiment, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Learn Hindi (Beginners) sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month. Learn Urdu asks for nothing beyond the download.
Learn Hindi (Beginners) holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 3.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Learn Hindi (Beginners) has 46 ratings behind it against 4, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 57% of Learn Urdu's written reviews are positive against 56% of Learn Hindi (Beginners)'s, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Learn Urdu ships an update every 12 months, Learn Hindi (Beginners) monthly. The most recent releases landed on September 21, 2026 and October 14, 2026 respectively.
