The clearest difference is review sentiment: Study Gateway at 76% against The Canopy App's 0%. Study Gateway also leads on ratings volume (900 vs 6). Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
The Canopy App holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Study Gateway has 900 ratings behind it against 6, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 76% of Study Gateway's written reviews are positive against 0% of The Canopy App's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Study Gateway ships an update every 5 months, The Canopy App every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 15, 2026 and October 3, 2026 respectively.
