From the developers who brought you Mr Word and Mr Draughts, Mr Chess is a brilliant implementation of the classic board game. Taking away all the unnecessary stuff, Mr Chess takes you straight into the game you love. There are no menus, not even a start button, you're just straight in. Click the small "i" button to access options, which are 1 or 2 player, and Easy, Medium or Hard (1 player only). You can switch between 1 and 2 player mode at any time and even change difficulty level in the middle of a game (great if you are struggling to beat Mr Chess). Playing against Mr Chess in 1 player mode, Easy level is perfect for beginners. Medium provides a challenge for most normal players, and Hard will defeat all but the best players. Now with Castling! Note, when castling, move your king, and your rook will move automatically. Mr Chess is beautifully designed and very minimalist, in keeping with the Mr Board Game philosophy. Enjoy! Mr Chess now offers Premium Subscription. Once subscribed, all advertising is removed from the app, allowing you to enjoy the classic board game with zero distractions. Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: Mr Chess at 4.7 against Chess's 4.2. Mr Chess also leads on iOS requirement (10.0 vs 15.0). Chess's advantage is review sentiment (83% vs 50%) and update cadence (monthly vs every 6 months). On price, ratings volume, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

CostPrice · In-app purchases · Ads · Monetization

Both are free to download. Mr Chess sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $0.49 per year and Chess sells 4 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Mr Chess holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.2. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 24 and 33 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of Mr Chess's written reviews are positive against 83% of Chess's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Mr Chess ships an update every 6 months, Chess monthly. Both last shipped on October 16, 2026.
