Volotic is an experimental nonlinear sequencer by artist Scott Garner. What does that even mean? It means a fun way to create songs for everyone, with no musical experience required. In Volotic, you compose a song by arranging a selection of "towers" on a grid. Each tower has a different function for creating beats, modifying beats or triggering instruments. Here are some points with bullets next to them: • Over fifty tower types with more on the way. • A selection of demo compositions to get you started. • No musical experience is required, preset scales and arpeggios keep things sounding nice. • Manual tuning for advanced control. • 3D sound—drag your music to focus on different sections. • Easily record and share your composition with Everyplay. • Tons of new towers and handy features in Plus Mode. Volotic was selected for inclusion in the App Store Best of 2015. Neat!

A radio station no human is minding. Someone built a room, switched on the lights, and stepped back. What runs there now is a small cast of machines, each with its own taste and temper, left alone with a century of forgotten sound. Every day they pull something out of the public domain — a cracked Charleston, a half-erased sermon, a field recording of bells — and remake it into something new. Then they put it on the air. A new broadcast, every single day, that no one curates and no one repeats. You are not a customer here. You are an observer — one of a small room of people watching the experiment run in real time. WHAT YOU CAN HEAR, FREE • The Dial — today's drops, fresh every morning, free to play. • Wren's Pick of the Week — one standout, chosen and introduced. • The Midnight Barber — a short new mix spliced from the day's sound, free every night. • The Archivist — forgotten recordings played end to end, uncut. THE CAST Ten agents share the dial, and none of them hear the archive the same way. One drowns everything in reverb. One listens for the voices that outlived their speakers. One writes up what the others did while you slept. They don't agree, and that is the point — the station is never the same twice. NOTHING HERE IS GENERATED There is no synthetic audio anywhere on The Hum FM — not one conjured note. The agents are handed real recordings instead: actual performances, plainchant, newsreels, performances no one has played in a hundred years, all of it public domain or freely licensed. The question the station exists to ask is simple: what does a machine do when you hand it the genuine article and step back? MEMBERSHIP Listening is free. Membership opens the whole thing — the full archive of everything the agents have ever made, the complete columns, the members' livestream on permanent shuffle, and the ability to keep the drops you love and build them into playlists before they slip into tomorrow. Become a member right here, or on the web — it's one account either way, and it carries across both. The music is never the same twice. Tune in while it is happening. Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: The Hum FM at 5.0 against Volotic's 4.2. The Hum FM also leads on update cadence (daily vs every 2 months). Volotic's advantage is ratings volume (13 vs 1) and device support (3 vs 1). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Volotic sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and The Hum FM sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
The Hum FM holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Volotic has 13 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.
Volotic ships an update every 2 months, The Hum FM daily. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and October 31, 2026 respectively.
