Description of Assault on Arnhem

"Ammunition exhausted. God Save the King!" - last radio message from the 1st Airborne Division. Assault On Arnhem is an operational level wargame for between one and four players, based on the famous Operation Market Garden campaign in September 1944. Each player manages units in either the Allied or Axis forces fighting over the bridges leading to the Dutch town of Arnhem. The aim of the game is to either capture or defend the bridge objectives by a certain time in the game. Assault On Arnhem is an easy game to start playing, although underneath the simple façade lies a much deeper level of complexity. - Up to four player hotseat multiplayer - Cross-platform online multiplayer (two players) - In-game tutorial - Turn based play - Four scenarios (Grave; Nijmegen; Arnhem; Operation Market Garden) - Fog of war mechanics (taking terrain into account). Hide your units in the woods and watch the enemy! - Night time turns with reduced visibility, affecting combat and command. Slip your recon units through enemy lines! - Logistics rules governing HQ supply lines and unit regrouping - Over 110 units of 7 distinct unit types - Three battle scenarios and a main campaign scenario - Three levels of AI difficulty, playing as either Axis or Allies - 3D Map View - Supply drops, reinforcement schedules - Simple enough for a beginner but with plenty of depth for experts Please note this game requires iPad 3 or better.

  • How war games should be made

I agree with another writer about difficulty levels, it is possible to win as axis on higher levels playing purely defensive, almost impossible with allies. Still a good game to play.

I would love to see more traditional strategy games mirroring classic board games such as Operation Mercury or Barbarossa

  • Great, until you want to play on a harder level

Great game - love the units, the movement, the trade offs with the limited movement points, the day/night factor, the way they try to include the randomness of war into it. I think most people who like this stuff will enjoy this all the way through until they try to move to the harder level, and then it’s just a waste of time. Hexwar claim the step up is incremental - the enemy get more movement points and are slightly harder in combat. This is not my experience. The enemy are impossible to beat. I had a panzer unit, and two full SS infantry against one para unit, open fields, not dug in, no supporting anti tank. It should have been a slaughter. I shelled the paras, then attacked with all three units. Not a shell landed on the paras, then my panzers were destroyed and then both infantry attacked until they were red. Not a single loss in the sole para opposition. Really?! I’ve been shelling the US para on the bridge at Nijmegen for days and not a single shell has caused any damage. It’s a bridge - there is no cover! The only option is to keep playing the easier levels and winning, or switching to harder and watching units sit and watch the opposition steamroller a win. Such a shame as this could be a really addictive and interesting game concept if they could tweak the difficulty levels a little.

  • Traditional hex and counter is best

I am so pleased to see a traditional hex wargame over the 3D type which seems to be everywhere. I hope we get more. It makes for more intelligent gaming like Chess instead of "whack-a-mole". Thankyou to the developer.
