Reviews of Hades' Star

  • Bad. Just bad

The dark nebula update has completely changed the game in a violently capricious manner. Much of the progress over the last year has been wiped away and replaced with a fiddly, over-complicated system. The beauty that was the minimalistic, complex-yet-simple og Hades Star has been replaced with a pulsing, flashy, over-designed shell of itself. Planet fill bars pulse every 7-8 seconds in an irritatingly distracting way. When choosing sectors to mine the green map flashes brightly at you. The new ship designs are completely over-designed. Battery-based weapons look the same so you can’t tell which of the three you’ve selected by observing the shot graphics. Those shots now glow and compete for space with all the other effects that also now glow. Hydrogen (mined to be used as fuel) is the most abundant element in the universe but is extremely scarce in the new HS. Its scarcity limits the amount you can do at any given time forcing you to play less, which is typically not what happens in games.

I could go on and on, but the fact remains that this once beautifully minimalistic game with good mechanics, graphics, and design choices has turned into a flashy, poorly-envisioned, overly complicated, fiddly shell of itself.
  • Loved the game but too many changes at once

Have played and loved this game for years, however the sudden overhaul of the core gameplay strategies and graphics will probably make me drop the game. For the graphics, the new models look particularly amateur, with what looks like pngs laid over hexagons, compared to the old style of the game which had a nice simplistic design, with clear shapes for different ships and buildings and a nice, clean ui. I greatly enjoyed the previous graphics and the new designs make the game harder to look at. As far as the gameplay, if the graphics hadn't been changed so badly I could probably take the time to learn the new system, but it's kind of saddening after spending so much time in the past and present trying out strategies and finding my rhythm in the old system/with the modules. This update probably would have worked better as a spin off app, rather than a complete change to a current one, and as the update stands now I dont think I'll be continuing to play hades star anytime soon.
  • Detailed review for new players

    1. So for anyone new to this game or looking to get into it, this isn’t clash of clans or anything similar. This is a slow grinding based game. This game takes time to build up and to be the best. THAT’s what makes it so fun. To rely on other players to get resources in events, to have comradery and to slowly build your fleet, that’s what makes the game so fun and so unique from other games I’ve played.

    2. This also isn’t a, hop on for 10 minutes and gather resources and get back on later. You have to be on the game for a good 30 minutes or so to gather resources but it does get a LOT easier as you grind for it. This ain’t a game for those who are handed easy wins, this is a game that keeps you constantly busy with tasks which is what keeps people from being bored of it.

The only issue I have with the game is in-game currency that can be bought with real money is NOT worth the purchase. The crystal to credits ratio is outrageous and not worth buying. I would recommend the devs change this even before the Dark Nebula update releases to make it more appealing to buy crystals to speed up upgrades times.

So if you like a slow paced game that keeps you busy and let’s you slowly get better, great! If not, find a different game.
