All Versions of Deflection Pro

9.0.1

April 20, 2024

• IMPROVED: Increase 2D grid spacing to make it easier to use on iPhone and iPad.
More

9.0.0

April 11, 2024

• NEW: Generate common US and EU load combinations using Allowable Stress Design, Load Resistance Factor Design, or Partial Safety Factors. Use the Document Options panel to select a design method, and then assign each load to a category using the load list view. Load combinations are automatically generated beneath the beam editor. All diagrams automatically aggregate and display results for all combinations. Select a combination card to zoom in the diagrams for that combination. When ASD is selected, the app uses safety factors (eg, 1.67) for limit states. When LRDF or Partial Safety Factors is selected, the app uses resistance factors (eg, 0.9) for limit states.

8.2.0

February 26, 2024

• NEW: Shear, moment, and axial force diagrams can now be displayed for frames and trusses. Use the buttons at the bottom of the screen to display or hide the diagrams. • IMPROVED: On iPad, the side panel in the frame editor can now be collapsed to make better use of screen space. • FIXED: Minor issues.

8.1.0

February 15, 2024

• NEW: Breakdown of shear, flexure, tension, and compression strengths. This will help tell you what has been considered in computing the available strength (eg, Lateral Torsional Buckling, Yielding, etc). You can see the breakdown by pressing the arrow next to each corresponding diagram. • NEW: Ability to export frames and trusses as a share link or PDF. • NEW: Added Mexican cross section data. • IMPROVED: Performance while dragging loads. • IMPROVED: Formatting of exported report (via share link). • FIXED: Minor issues and improvements across the app.

8.0.0

January 22, 2024

If you forgot your steel construction manual at home, no worries. This major release introduces beam column checks based on the AISC specification, and it accurately reproduces tabulated values in the manual. • NEW: Shear, flexure, tension, and compression strength checks for beams and columns based on the AISC specification. Only allowable stress design (ASD) is currently supported, but the safety factors can be overridden. Unbraced length for flexure and stiffener spacing for shear can be specified if applicable. Relevant factors for tension and compression are also captured. • IMPROVED: Modeling of cross sections now takes flange slopes and fillet and toe radii into account. Besides producing better looking graphics, we use this to validate and fill in shape data in our database as needed. • IMPROVED: New screen layout in the beam editor to make better use of large screens and be able to display new inputs and outputs related to the new strength checks. • IMPROVED: Re-introduced a draggable ruler to read values from the charts under the beam in the main page. • IMPROVED: The material library is now broken up into sections for steel, wood, and other materials. • CHANGED: The country database options for the cross section library are now configured from the settings page.

7.2.0

September 28, 2023

• NEW: Save your designs to external files. • IMPROVED: Vastly improved translations for all languages. • IMPROVED: Screen color contrast and addressed minor issues throughout the app.
More

7.1.0

August 28, 2023

• NEW: Normal force diagrams for frame and truss beams with horizontal forces. • NEW: Deflection diagrams and visualization for frame and truss members. • FIXED: Minor issues across the app.

7.0.0

June 26, 2023

This exciting major release, which was about 1 year in the works, introduces the new frame and truss editor. Stay tuned for more features and improvements to come soon! • NEW: Frame and truss editor. Tap the new grid template card to start! • NEW: In the classic beam editor, you can now rotate the beam and the forces applied to it. • FIXED: Dozens of minor issues across the app. This milestone is dedicated to our good friends at Juan Pelota, a coffee shop inside a bike shop in the heart of Austin, TX, who for many years made the hundreds of vanilla lattes that have made all of this possible. #MadeInAustin

Description of Deflection Pro

Deflection Pro is an advanced structural analysis calculator for beam, truss, and frame design. The software is designed to be simple, intuitive, and useful for structural engineers worldwide. Like our other apps, it is designed to run on all your devices. LOAD COMBINATIONS Deflection Pro generates common load combinations based on American and European standards. Simply select a desired design method in the settings page and assign a category to each load. The results are seamlessly aggregated and integrated into the same charts and interface as if you were designing a simple beam case. BEAM COLUMN CAPACITY CHECKS Deflection Pro calculates beam column strength capacity for flexure, shear, tension, and compression based on the AISC specification. The software accurately reproduces tabulated values in steel construction manuals. Flexure Design • Yielding • Lateral torsional buckling • Local buckling • Flange local buckling • Compression flange local buckling • Web local buckling • Compression tee stem local buckling Shear Design • Web shear strength • Web shear strength, considering field action Tension Design • Yielding tensile strength • Rupture tensile strength Compression Design • Flexural buckling • Torsional buckling OTHER FEATURES Since this is our latest and greatest structural analysis app, we are actively improving it and adding new functionality. It receives more frequent updates than other tiers of our software. Other advanced functionality include the ability to directly export to PDF and to save to an external file for backup and sharing. Reviews of Deflection Pro

  • Missing units

    Dear developer.

I'd like to express my gratitude for this straightforward and valuable app. I'd like to bring to your attention that in Europe, the standard unit for stress is (N/mm^2), which currently isn't available in the app's settings. Would it be possible to include this unit in the list of stress units?

Once more, thank you for your hard work and dedication.

    Developer Response

This means a lot, and we really appreciate it. Although we already have MPa, which equals 1 N/mm^2, we've added N/mm^2 as part of the upcoming 8.0.0 release.
  • Migrate models?

I’ll return and increase the rating if I learn from the developer how to see my models from the regular version.
  • 2nd review important problem

This app does not consider lateral support of the beam compression flange. This is a serious omission if used by someone that is not knowledgeable with beam design such as architects, construction people, engineering students, etc.
At least one app in the App Store does take this in consideration and that is the “Steel Beams” app. However it does not have all the bells an whistles of Deflection Pro.

    Developer Response

Thank you for pointing out this important detail! It took some time and effort to get here, but the upcoming 8.0.0 version (this week) will feature an implementation of the AISC specification, including compression flange buckling and other relevant checks for beams and columns. You will be able to compute flexural strength by entering the unbraced length Lb value. Of course, we've added more bells and whistles too. :)
