Lots of irrelevant job postings and spam

I do really like how there’s lots of job postings on this app, but I’ve noticed that a good amount of them are just irrelevant to what I’m looking for (even though I put in my preferences into my profile). This results in what feels like a lot of spam from this app, as I keep getting messages which say “You’re a good match for this employer,” just to open it up and find out that it’s an engineering job and I never studied engineering in my life.

The other thing I find highly irritating about this app are the “apply externally” applications. You click on apply externally, only for it to open up the website within your the app, rather than on a separate browser (like Safari). I wish it would open up externally, but it doesn’t.

Good concept, lots of problems

In theory, having a platform aimed at internship seeking students and new grads is a great idea. However, having used the app and the website for a while, there’s a lot of problems with execution:
1. Handshake really needs to crack down on spam. I believe that employers paying to contact students make up a good portion of Handshake’s revenue so I doubt this will ever be fixed. Employers spam students about positions entirely unrelated to student’s area of study (I have been spammed regarding server positions). There’s no way to block contacts on Handshake, and companies will completely ignore you indicating you are not interested.

2. Handshake is full of dead listing and there is no way to report a listing for a job that does not exist. Handshake only allows universities to report listing so these listings will continue to sit on the site indefinitely

3. The new home page is bizarre. I do not want TikTok style videos about job hunting clogging up the home page to what should be a job board. I have no clue who this feature is for

Reporting System?

The website is a good way for employers to reach out to students. There are a few issues with a lot of the employers on the app, like they often list the opportunity as paid to get more students to see the post even if they do not plan to pay. This could be easier to avoid if the app allowed you a way to report employers like this. On the mobile app I don’t think they give you an option to report and on the website it doesn’t let you submit the report. The website doesn’t allow you to send links to the employer as well, which is annoying because many of them are asking for online portfolio links and not files.

Complete Trash!!!

Why am I getting jobs outside of my filtered preferences? Why are so many of these job posting fake, expired, or you consistently have to go to third party websites to go through the arduous process of filling out all the information that you’ve taken all the time to fill out on Handshake?! What was the purpose of filling out all that information on Handshake if you have to go to third-party websites just to do it all over again this is so stupid! I think this is a great app for undergraduates or graduate students straight out with little to no professional experience but anyone looking with years of professional experience and multiple degrees…this is not for us. There’s a $35 charge for alumni to utilize Handshake…please don’t waste your money! If I could give 0 stars, I would! Will you please upgrade your application to stop allowing fake jobs, expired jobs, and scammers to post ridiculous videos. I thought this was a serious business networking job site application?!

We appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback on your experience with Handshake. We’re committed to constantly improving the product and will share your feedback with our team. It’s important to note that Handshake never charges a fee to students. Universities may charge alumni fees in order to continue to access their career services resources.

Limited Accessibility for City University of Seattle Students

I recently attempted to use Handshake to explore job opportunities, a platform known for its utility in connecting students with potential employers. Unfortunately, I encountered a significant hurdle: my institution, City University of Seattle, is not recognized or listed within the app. This exclusion is a substantial drawback, as it restricts access to the resources and opportunities that Handshake provides, which are valuable for students' career growth. While the concept of Handshake is promising, the lack of inclusivity for all universities diminishes its potential benefits. Therefore, I am rating it 1 out of 5 stars, primarily due to this limitation. I hope to see improvements in the future that will include a wider range of institutions, ensuring all students can benefit equally from what Handshake has to offer.

It’s very worst response

This app was great at first!

Handshake is easy to use, I like that you can message employers and take to recruiters directly. I got my first internship through handshake and I am extremely grateful. Recently the app has gone down hill. It’s becoming more and more like indeed and LinkedIn. If I search for a role I get jobs that are completely unrelated to the job search or I’m not qualified for. I was under the impression that this app was best suited for students/college graduates looking for entry level roles but many of the roles I’ve seen require 5+ years of experience. I’m not sure if Handshake is trying to appeal to a new market but it’s making it a lot harder to use and enjoy this app. Handshake don’t let us down!

Update: I stil LOVE the fact that they never have scam jobs. I can use the app and look for opportunities (although many of them don’t match what I’m looking for) without worrying about if it’s a scam :)

Handshake is great except

I’m coming in here to report a problem where when I’m trying to look at the employers that will be present at my school it won’t let me scroll for the whole list. It will jump me to the button where I registered for the event. This is so annoying because I’m simply just trying to look at the employer so I can plan my visits and meanwhile voiceover and I’m taking me to the registration button. I use Handshake on an iPhone 13 with voiceover and would really appreciate if you could fix this. Thank you.
