2.4.3

October 1, 2023

This is a small update with various small and subtle changes sprinkled around the app.   One notable addition, mainly for sailors in the USA, is the addition of support for OFS tide height data. The OFS models are high resolution regional models around the USA, which include ocean current and tide height information. There is OFS data for a variety of regions around the USA, including the Salish Sea (including Puget Sound, the San Juans and around Vancouver Island), San Francisco Bay, Tampa, Delaware, and more.

2.4.2

March 30, 2023

This is a small update. Two of the larger changes are: • added three new analysis image types to the weather routing system: true wind direction; change in wind speed; change in wind direction (backing or veering.) • the Offshore Data email system, which has been deprecated for almost a year, has now been removed. Along with these changes, there are several other small enhancements, scattered around the app.

2.4

May 13, 2022

Most of the changes in this release are related to weather routing. The weather router now supports the concept of heaving to. This will help sailors consider the option of sailing what may be a long way out of their way to avoid bad weather, or to heave to and resume sailing when the conditions improve. In addition to the new support for heaving to, there are also improvements in the meteograms, weather routing feedback in the timeline, along with other improvements. There are some additional details in the release notes.

2.3

March 30, 2021

This is a large update to the Weather Routing system, along with subtle improvements in a variety of other areas. This update introduces the worlds first isochronal Weather Routing solver which is able to respect intermediate constraint points. A constraint point is a point which a route must leave to port or starboard. Constraint points are needed to describe short routes which have crossings, as well as to express your preference on a long open ocean passage to stay to a given side of a strategic point. A simple example of a short route that needs this ability is a route which goes around an island, returning to the start point. These routes can now be described in LuckGrib, and optimized Weather Routing solutions found for them. When Weather Routing was introduced to LuckGrib in early 2020 it offered industry leading performance, industry leading visualization tools and was creating some of the most competitive routes available. With this new ability to describe constrained routes to its isochronal solver, LuckGrib continues to lead the industry in innovation. Other updates are: • improved the quality of optimized routes when the start and/or end points are close to land • added two new WR ensemble variations that help answer the questions: how far can I fall off the wind and still arrive at a reasonable time? or, how hard do I need to push the boat to arrive at a reasonable time? • reduced the amount of memory used when creating multiple WR solutions. This can, in turn, reduce the occurrence of system memory warnings • improved the upwind / downwind analysis image to show reaching angles • added support for the new CFS weather model, which provides seasonal length weather data, useful when running Weather Routing experiments in the pre-planning phase for a long passage Please read the release notes for more details.

2.2

January 20, 2021

This update contains a number of fixes and enhancements. Some of the more notable improvements are: * improvements to the base map display. A land height texture has been added, along with lines indicating major highways and, in the USA, county boundaries. * improvements to weather routing isochrone generation for slow boats, such as rowboats or slower cruising boats. Also, the isochrones generated are now slightly more dense in most situations. * a number of improvements to the import and export of GPX files.

Description of LuckGrib

LuckGrib is a fully featured, easy to use, fast GRIB reader, viewer, downloader and weather router. Remote access to weather data via satellite or email is supported. Advanced weather routing capabilities, for sailors, is available. Weather forecast data, packaged as GRIB files, can be downloaded directly from the LuckGrib server cluster. For offshore sailors, LuckGrib offers a best-in-class, complete solution: industry leading visualization and ease of use, highly optimized weather data downloads via satellite, along with industry leading optimized weather routing and route analysis. Inshore sailors may not require satellite downloads, but will benefit from the rest of the system. LuckGrib is unique among apps that were originally designed for sailors, in that the weather analysis tools are powerful enough to attract attention from meteorologitsts. For meteorologists, and weather enthusiasts, LuckGrib offers access to a wide range of high resolutions models, a number of global models, weather data at the surface, 850mb, 500mb and 250mb levels, parameters ranging from simple things such as wind, pressure and temperature, to more advanced quantities such as simulated radar, standard deviations, precipitable water, lightning, vertical vorticity, helicity and more. Access is available to the entire suite of parameters in GFS, HRRR, NAM and others. Downloads are available via: a direct high speed internet connection, through the Iridium GO! as well as through the RedPort Optimizer. LuckGrib provides access to many weather and ocean models, including: GFS, GFS Wave, GDPS/GEM, GEFS, HRRR, RAP, NAM, NBM, Icon-EU, Arpège, Arome, OpenWRF, RTOFS, NCOM and many others. These models allow you to study surface conditions, wave and swell state, ocean currents, winds at the jet stream level, mid atmosphere as well as at the boundary layer. In addition, LuckGrib allows you to explore weather model uncertainty with its support for standard deviation and probability values. LuckGrib is a thoroughly modern and advanced GRIB viewer. See: luckgrib.com/models for more details on the models and parameters that are available. LuckGrib comes with a 14 day free trial. If you are interested in studying weather and gaining access to detailed weather forecasts, download the app and give it a try. Downloading data via satellite or email requires the Offshore Data in-app purchase. See offshore.luckgrib.com for more details on the remote access capabilities. The LuckGrib weather routing system is an industry leading, high quality, robust, high performance and comprehensive system. See routing.luckgrib.com for more details. Access to the isochronal weather routing system requires an in-app purchase. The LuckGrib isochronal Weather Routing solver is able to respect intermediate constraint points, the first in the industry. Many sailboat race routes, perhaps the majority, have routes which cross. Two examples are Fastnet and the Around Catalina Island race. These routes can now be described in LuckGrib, and optimized Weather Routing solutions found for them. Note that LuckGrib does not use a subscription pricing model - after the free trial, when you decide to purchase the app, there will be a one time charge, not an ongoing subscription. Reviews of LuckGrib

  • Absolutely Brilliant!

I’ve been a huge weather nerd for many years and the fact that I’ve only just discovered this app a month ago is blowing my mind. I had every way to track the weather and even knew about forecast models. I kept saying there has got to be a better way to view forecast models, especially on my iPhone and iPad. Well sure enough I finally came across this app mentioned after seeing it mentioned on Reddit and I discovered the wonderful world of GRIB files and easily accessible weather models. I immediately started using the app and could not put it down. I proceeded to learn everything I could about GRIB files and LuckGrib. This is a game changer. Fantastic UI/UX by a very thoughtful developer. Has everything I was looking for. Even though this is a niche product I hope to see it maintained for as long as possible. If you love studying the weather then you will be glad you found LuckGrib!

    Thanks!
  • Simply Amazing!

Craig has created an amazing tool, with features not found elsewhere. His thoughtful inclusion of many different views useful for passage planning (motoring vs sailing, day vs night, waves, etc) are usually spot on for what I want. And the ability to vary the departure time, oh my! You need a boundary line to avoid Frying Pan shoals? No problem. Or to force the route through the narrow Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel openings? Sure! And all data is free. Just pay once. I love it.

    Thanks!
  • Very impressed

I wanted a weather app with routing but I don’t want to pay a subscription.

    This checks all the boxes

My only fear is the developer will give up on this app since it’s a pretty small market. Please keep the updates coming!!

    Developer Response

Thanks! You're right that this is a small market. Thanks for helping me out by adding your review! Also, don't forget to tell all your sailor friends about the app :-)
