Description of My Emotional Compass

Put Your Feelings into Words Emotions are an essential part of our lives. The goal of this app is to give you better insights into your emotions. Awareness and labeling of our emotions puts us in a better to position to control them and communicate them to others. Research suggests that labeling emotions can help minimize an unpleasant emotional response. Without recognition of these emotions, your emotions might control you, instead of the other way around. My Emotional Compass systemically guides people through a series of guided prompts, helping them to hone in on the words that best describe the emotions they are feeling. My Emotional Compass will encourage you to use labels that are specific. The more emotional labels, the more points. More points suggest greater mastery of your emotions. Built-in charting helps you track your progress. My Emotional Compass is the result of over four years of evidence-based research by Dawn Neumann, PhD, of Indiana University School of Medicine, and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, and supported by grants from the NIH (1R41HD077967-01A1) and NIDILRR (90DRTB0002).

  • The app keeps crashing

The app keeping crashing every time I’m getting close to naming my emotion.
  • Embarrassingly helpful

Here I am with a masters plus post graduate work professional, who receives accolades from my superiors and colleagues for my excellent written communication skills and yet I struggle to find words to identify my own feelings. Just the other day I was approached by a complete stranger, who saw and complimented me on my public speaking she saw on a YouTube video that wasn’t even my own recording. She told me what an inspiration my public advocacy was to her and her family. I am the peer that my colleagues ask to proofread their work I’m not just for grammar and spelling, but for effectiveness of their message. All of these people in my life would be stunned to find out that the person they said to be so effective at communicating thoughts and ideas is completely helpless when it comes to communicating or even recognizing their own emotions. It was the tension building up in my body from ignoring my own emotions that prompted me to Google search psychological literature in search of some publication that I thought might be helpful and one such publication spoke of the authors of this app and put it in the footnotes and that is how I found this app. It has become the tangible tool that I use at the first sign of tension in my body. It walked me through the most elementary process that somehow I’ve made it this far in life without developing independently, but yet here we are. I take screenshots of it that I later use for journaling. The process has caused me to realize how important my feelings are, and therefore how important I am, which has been instrumental in developing a greater self-respect and in doing so has resulted in a happier life. I cannot thank the developers enough for creating this app.
