  • Recent update is great!

The recent upgrade has made this app awesome, I can easily find water points and stoppages. The user interface looks great!
Big thanks to all involved in what I can only describe as a very welcome upgrade

Thanks - glad you are enjoying the update. Happy boating / walking :)
  • OMG WHAT HAVE YOU DONE???

I just noticed the App Icon had changed since I last opened it earlier this week…..OMG WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, it’s horrid!!! Not as bit as clear as the original. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, springs to mind!! The first thing is as,I say, graphically and then the first thing (a closure) I look at is literally a couple of miles out. Not looked any further yet other than trying a few of the other “features” which seem more godly to apply? Not sure I’ll be keeping/using this anymore!!

The old version had reached it's end of life in that some services it used were about to be turned off. Most people seem to prefer the new map style.
  • Love the app

    Hi
    I love the app
But is there any way this could include widths, depths and air height of canals especially at pinch points
I know this is a big ask but it would great to have this sort of information consolidated into one place
    Thank you very much

    Developer Response

Thanks - I have looked into this. Will include more canal infromation soon.
  • Useful but could do with more options

Very useful app but it really needs some options. On the iPhone the text is unreadably small. One the iPad I can just about make it out. Please, please add an option to change the text size. Trying to read while navigating is impossible.
The blurry google map style overlay that kicks in when zooming in is a nice feature but the blurring does nothing to clarify what’s there. Please can we have an option to switch it off in preferences?
Also agree with other reviewers asking for map legends. Without one it’s leaving me scratching my head.

The app has now been updated. Bigger text and more features as requested.
  • Decent App

It’s free and runs smoothly on my iPad.
It’s just missing info such as locks, moorings etc and a key to understand what the symbols are (e.g. what are the white circles meant to represent?).

I would happily pay a fee to have a version of this that has these features.

The app has now been updated and now has a map key
  • Not great yet, but has potential.

Well, I have downloaded it and looked at it carefully, but haven’t had the opportunity to use it on my boat yet. With difficulty, I found an area that I know well (no search function, to easily locate a specific junction, town, marina or flight of locks?), and noticed a water point and a diesel point that I know are there but aren’t marked. I tried to report them, but the option was greyed out, with an orange note saying “requires ...”, the rest of the phrase running off the side of my screen and no apparent way of scrolling across to see it! Not a lot of use really: I guess I’ll never know what it requires and never be able to report anything 😕
I can’t find anywhere a key to the symbols used. For example, what are the little white dots that appear here and there meant to represent? What about the sets of three random words that litter the screen? I do have some vague idea of what they are about, but I don’t see what possible use they are to me as a canal user, they are just clutter on the map.
I do like the way that the map is overlaid on a greyed-out satellite map, that is helpful.
One more ask, that would hugely increase its value to me, would be the facility to add notes. If I could mark a spot with “don’t moor here, noisy road” or “sloes on the off-side here” that would be invaluable to me and far superior to my current method of noting such things.

  • Brilliant app

This really is a fantastic app, well thought out and it just works so well. GPS tells you exactly where you are and it beats look king at paper maps to work out which bridge you are at etc. Well worth getting. Thanks
  • Brilliant - and Free!

Great mapping. Thanks for all the hard work. At first glance, it’s not always easy to see which canal is which, and labels would be useful for easy recognition. I agree that a facility for users to contribute pubs, shops etc would make this a real rival to Nicholson’s Guides.
  • Useful App, but some info needs updating

In the main, this is a useful App for learning routes within the network and planning journeys; but there are numerous instances of canal network maintenance advice which is seriously out of date, as the work has long since been completed - and if the App is out of date on completed work, the concern is that it might not be up-to-date on imminent or current work. Even so, there are advantages over carrying multiple copies of “Nicholson’s” and, therefore, I give this App 3.5 stars, but it would be 4.5 stars if this issue was resolved.

  • Great App

As a novice on the canals this has been really useful, it would be great to see pubs and eateries added as POI to allow you to plan evening stop, maybe with an option to comment on the premises.
