bug fixes and gameplay improvements

1.31.1

July 31, 2023

Critters, lend us your ears— Today's patch, version 1.31, includes a variety of bug fixes focused on improving interactions related to the Coffin Makers card. As always, if you encounter anything in game that seems a little funky, drop us a line using the in-game feedback option, or via email to Support@DireWolfDigital.com. Thanks for playing Root! Improvements Start of Birdsong ability resolution order has been reworked to preserve more strategic options, i.g Using Saboteurs to remove an enemy Coffin Makers before it triggers, getting warriors back in supply from Coffin Makers, and spending that on Riverfolk Services. An additional window has been added to resolve Field Hospitals at the start of players’ turn that owns Coffin Makers. The camera now remembers your last zoom level when returning to a game, including whether you were in strategic view or not. Users are now able to send feedback without being logged in. Improved the accuracy of a number of tooltips, including Bug Fixes Fixed a crash trigger that could occur when specific combinations of factions were in a game with Coffin Makers crafted. Removed various loc strings that, albeit rare, could sneak into the game

Description of Root Board Game

Play the digital adaptation of the beloved tabletop board game. Root is a game of adventure and war where 2 to 4 players battle for control of a vast wilderness. The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods. Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root.

Reviews of Root Board Game

  • Love it but some UI requests

Hi, love Root, love how your team has taken the time and care to reflect the characteristic art direction of the board game in your UI. The Direwolf team has gone with an art direction that stands out from other digitized versions of board games I have played. A really great job capturing the charm of Kyle Ferrin’s art in your menus, music, animations, and color palette among others. Overall I thoroughly enjoy playing this game with my friends.
A couple issues that have come to be a thorn in the side after months of daily play:
    1. For async games, a skip recap button would be much appreciated. After watching the recap the first time, it becomes a pain to continuously rewatch the recap every time you want to consider options on another player’s turn or just view the board to strategize.
    2. The buttons for some of the factions can be small and with cellular play, incorrect buttons may be mashed. There’s been a lot of care put into this with undo buttons and “Are you sure?” warning windows. The vagabond desperately needs a more secure “Are you sure?” warning whenever ending daylight. Skipped vagabond turns are more common than they could be.

Overall, great game, awesome adaptation. Thank you a lot for the fun times with my friends.

    Developer Response

Thanks for your feedback! We have logged your feedback for async recaps and have sent it to the team!
  • Need more customizability

This is a great port from cardboard to touchscreen. But it’s lacking quite a bit of stuff from the actual cardboard. We should be able to see a list of cards in each deck without having to leave the app. Advanced set up should also be separated from faction choices (at least when playing bots). If I’m playing against bots, it’s because I want to practice a certain faction or maybe test out certain interactions between factions, so it would be nice to be able to set up a game quickly (with the real adv set up rules that everyone uses) without having to start up and resign games until you get the match up you’re looking for. Board game apps should be as sandboxy as possible.
  • I Adore This Game

What a deep, adorable, and endlessly iterative game to have in my pocket 🥰
I love the charming design and solid implementation of this fantastic board game. I’ve played hundred of hours of this game between the PC and iPhone versions, and have joined a great discord community (shout-out Woodland Warriors) with lots of experienced and kind people to play with.

That said, it would be amazing to get more support from DireWolf with the game’s online. While it’s certainly functional, there is a big problem with players leaving in the middle of games without consequence, and a no ability to report other players. If you’re playing with folks you know (or through Woodland Warriors) this isn’t an issue, but be wary if you’re looking for games solo.

That, and it would be *huge* to have more control of some more rule set elements when making a game. Being able to ban factions while making an adset game, and adding the popular Despot Infamy home rule as an option would be my two top picks that would put the digital experience over the top!

Hoping to see Marauders sooner than later, but that DireWolf takes the time they need! I’d love to see this version properly replace TableTop Simulator as the standard for non-physical play.

Can’t wait to play this game for years to come!
