Won’t pair

Does this version pair with Aithre 4.0 ? I can’t get it to pair on any of my devices. All have IOS 17.

Needs improvement

The unit works well, the application needs a UX developer. Not very customizable. Devotes most of the screen to a product that needs additional subscription with no way to remove and show what a user need to see. carbon monoxide screen is tiny on the home screen/desktop. No way to hide buttons on top that, in my case, I do not use.

App crashes creating a safety hazard in the air

This should not be allowed on the market. I’ve used it together with Illyrian Smart Oximeter for less than 2 hours and the app started crashing perpetually on startup. Restarting the phone did not help. Had to delete and reinstall it, but now I don’t trust it so am returning the oximeter for a refund. I don’t recommend anyone using this product in the air without having a backup pulse oximeter. Also, the app appears very amateurish. It comes with superfluous features that clutter the interface and appear pointless. For example, it tries to upsell you to get inflight PIREPs and weather reports but the app needs Internet connection for those. In the age of ForeFlight and FIS-B weather through portable ADS-B receivers, offering weather product requiring internet is probably the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of. Plus why would I need a weather product inside an oximeter app if I have my EFB and Windy. Overall, super disappointed and rating the app and physical product as junk. Apparently it wasn’t tested in basic scenarios since it’s clear from other comments that others have experienced similar problems. The developer response is unacceptable - they say - hey, “please understand that a lot of technology needs to come together to make it work”. Who cares? You didn’t make it work. It’s a stupid simple oximeter. The scope creep in your app made it difficult for you to focus on core scenario. The engineer or two who coded it literally doesn’t know what they are doing.

Crashed and corrupted

Crashed and corrupted after about an hour in the air on my iPad that i use for foreflight. After this I could not get the app to launch again, had to delete and reinstall. Fortunately my phone is my backup efb and i had this app on it as well, so i continued on at FL180 with my phone monitoring spo2. I have some gripes with the interface though. There’s no way to get rid of the pirep screen or unused “data blocks” at the top. It would be nice to be able to clean up the interface and only show elements relevant to the devices that are paired. The angel button is particularly bad because it covers up part of the UI and is related to a device that has to be wired into the plane.

One thing worrisome is how long it takes for the illyrian to realize that it has come off your skin, i had that happen on my first flight using it and puckered up a little when i saw 75% spo2, but then discovered the sensor slipped out from under my earcup.

Aithre is a good company with good products, but needs a little polish on the software to work out some kinks.

Response from developer

Sorry to hear you are not satisfied, but we hear your gripes. We have lots of technology that must come together to make it possible and we try to update the app as much as possible. It is not static and we do try to incorporate user feedback. Version 13.3 has been uploaded today and should be available for download and will improve many of the areas you mentioned. Note you can set a default page in the main settings tab so you don't have to see areas you don't want. Also, Angel has been tucked further from view and the navigations buttons and settings locations have been improved.

Great products, occasionally frustrating app.

So far I haven’t figured out how to hide devices I don’t have. I have the pulse ox and CO monitor, but for some reason the app insists on showing me the system pressure for a system I don’t have and will never have (my plane has built in and I have an O2 concentrator for day to day). I really want to hide that from both the top strip in the app and from the watch app because it shoves CO out of view (bad!) but can’t seem to find a way to do so. Usual tap hold, drag, etc doesn’t do it and show hide doesn’t appear to be in the settings.

Response from developer

The app has a setting option in the settings page for a default home screen. You can choose Carbon Monoxide Shield and will only see that page. There are many settings that users tend to overlook, so 13.3 uploaded today has improved the location of the settings, the navigation buttons, and the user interface for a better experience. We work on the app continuously in-house so there will always be improvements and we work to incorporate user feedback.

UI needs some love

I really like the idea behind this app and I’m happy to support it. It was relatively easy to start and the oximeter paired with the app automatically, neat! I’m using the headband and the data looks accurate.

However some things could improve:

1. The UI is extremely confusing and non-standard. It uses gray text on black backgrounds (hard to read), it uses nonstandard UI elements across the whole application, and it is not clear what is a button and what’s not.
2. Sampling quality is pegged at 120 for me - I’m not sure what this means.

Again I really like the idea of this app, but it could use some polish!

We have updated the homepage based on your comments and will continue to carry through changes throughout the app. A 120 for your sampling quality is very good and indicates your placement of the oximeter is ideal. You may learn more about the oximeter operation on our Youtube channel as we have a dedicated video on its operation. We are pilot owned and operated in Idaho and have a lot to work on between our technology, network, avionics, and oxygen, so we do our best to update the app as much as possible. Thanks for your feedback

Problems

The cut little banner at the bottom of app. Don’t click it !!!!! They will change you $9.99 for doing so. It says remove before flight. Warning caution then you are subscribed to a feature of hardware you don’t even own

Response from developer

The app offers features such as pirep notifications, ATIS recalls, and airport lookups. Instead of charging all users for the app, we have tied the upgrades to the features. The pop up clearly states what is being offered and Apple password is required to confirm the purchase. These features are not free to develop nor maintain and we ask for a modest 9.99/year or about 80 cents a month. These features do not require separate hardware to work, only the iOS device. Any issues with refunds can be easily handled through iTunes.

Does work....

Disappointed to find that it does not rotate? Frequently pilots use their iPads in landscape mode or upside down. I contacted the developer. They listened. It now rotates. Changed my rating. Does not allow to change degrees from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Response from developer

Version 7.8 now allows landscape or portrait mode for iPad and also split screen and multitasking.

Update: Lightning in a Bottle

Through various updates and Aithre’s demonstrated commitment to safety and their product line, they have now achieved a wicked risk-mitigation solution to the carbon monoxide threat in the everyday general aviation pilot world. Aithre didn’t just talk about future improvements, they did something about it in quick fashion.

When it comes to CO awareness I trust my life and my family’s lives to Aithre.

Chris, thanks for your feedback. We released a new update today pending review by Apple. Added additional Siri and popup notifications to now include: connection status, disconnection status, carbon monoxide warnings above 2, 10, and 50 ppm, oxygen tank depletion below 500 psi, pressure altitude greater than 12500 ft and 15,000 feet. Also added a user setting for a custom carbon monoxide threshold warning, which is provided via Siri and popup notification. Additionally added a user setting for a custom pressure altitude warning threshold, which is provided via Siri and popup notification. These additional user settings and Siri notifications enable enhanced safety in flight and can be provided via the aviation headset when the headset is paired to the iOS device running this application. Also added additional support for pressure altitude determinations, FAA oxygen requirements that are automatically determined based on pressure altitude, flow rate, tank time remaining, and additional functions with respect to Aithre Altus portable oxygen tank management.
