Updated - Does work

New:

The improved instruction videos as well as the instructions to twist the iPhone 90° allowed me to read a US passport correctly.

Interesting data on this app but not entirely sure what else id do with it other than a tech demo.

Old: Attempted to read a United States passport and a NEXUS card with the app. Scanned the picture page successfully, never was able to read the NFC chip. Removed case, no change. Rebooted iPhone 15 Pro Max, restarted app and now camera never came on to take a picture of the document. Camera works fine, phone recognizes other NFC devices like the silly poker chip from Identiverse’s scavenger hunt and yubikey. The app just doesn’t work. Not a good experience if we’re going to try to rely on this for identity verification.

And of course happy to read it now works with your US passport :-) The ReadID Me is indeed an app with little direct use, it makes it possible for people to see what is in their chip, and if this chip (still) works. The underlying ReadID technology is integrated in other apps for travel, banking etc, which is how we pay our bills.^MW

Works but you must hold the top of your phone above barcode

So struggle to get it to work at first cause I didn’t hold my phone in the right spot.
Remove case then hold the top of your phone to the back page slightly above the barcode.

Does not work

US passports are known to be very difficult to read because the placement of phone and passports is very sensitive. This is likely to shielding in the passport blocking the NFC signal in many case. For the app to work you have to hold the phone to the inside of the back page. We changes our app to be clearer in this instruction. Please do try again.^MW

Lift the phone slightly when it’s reading the card but just lay it flat when reading the passport

Works but privacy concern

This app can scan the info on your passport chip to help you know if it is working. But it is unclear whether the info is sent to a 3rd party so there is a data privacy risk.

Works Well on 2024-Issued US Passport

I recently updated my passport. This passport has a black-and-white photograph on a plastic card and a color photo on the signature page. For this version, the chip is in the back page, the one with a barcode. This combination takes about 5 seconds to read chip data.
