Description of Nashville Numbers

Music notation is made simple with this shorthand system which puts chords into numbers 1 though 7 and streamlines the page into a simple and clean format. Forget about pencil, erasers and photocopy! This app combines technology with tried and tested methods; allowing users to create song charts with the ease and speed of pen and paper. For over 60 years, the Nashville Number System has been the standard for musicians in live performance, recording sessions, and teaching environments. The published book has become required reading in many of the most prestigious music schools, including Belmont, ETSU, Lee and Liberty University, while also being required reading for anyone when they get their first gig in music city. This innovative app brings the must-read instructional book by Chas Williams, with well over 50,000 copies sold, into our digital age by seamlessly allowing charts to be written on your digital device! Please give feedback of a 5 star review, or contact us directly. If you’re not happy with the app, we will issue a full refund of your purchase price (in exchange for not writing a bad review) and insure your issues are reviewed and fixed. Reviews of Nashville Numbers

  • Great app, two minor issues

Great app for the cost. Does exactly what I expected it to. Only two issues: the 'X's don't line up underneath numbers, looks uneven. And on the desktop app, it's cumbersome to use the mouse to input symbols. I know this is meant mostly for iPad, but it would be great to use it on the desktop as well.

Highly recommend this app, even with the two issues! Makes my chart writing so much clearer, as opposed to my horrible handwriting
  • Missing organization feature

Top-notch digital app for making charts, efficiently and cleanly. Not much I would change about the chart making tool itself. However, the app is missing organizational features. User-made charts are listed alphabetically in one long list, rather than in individual files or modules such as “artist” or “genre”, which is a huge pain when searching for material on the spot.

Of course, users can always export charts to their own organizational apps, but an internal filing system is surprisingly absent from this app.

Hoping the developers will fix this feature in 2024! Thanks for making an awesome
app for musicians in Nashville, and beyond!

    Developer Response

Hi Drassssssssss, I appreciate you checking out the NN App; glad you like it. It's really expensive to make an app, so we concentrated on the single function of creating number charts. We'd love to have text boxes and all the nesting organization folders, but we had to decide where we wanted to put our effort. The NNApp is singly a really good way to make Nashville Number charts on iPad or iPhone. There are a bunch of excellent pdf organizers out there; way better than we were prepared to compete with. For example, For Score does everything you talk about that's missing from our app, really well. I've written hundreds of number charts with the NNApp. Check out my workflow: Write a chart as detailed as you want. Use Apple pencil to write syncopated rhythmic notation, or save that for later. Tap the export button. Tap the For Score icon. With 2 taps, your chart opens automatically in the FS app where you can add arrangement instructions with moveable text boxes or Apple Pencil. After arranging, you can then place the chart in any folder/setlist you create. You can use a bluetooth foot switch to turn pages and move from chart to chart during performance. I'm glad you like making charts with our app. Reach out if there's anything we can help with.   Meanwhile, we have a brand new free update; NN 1.6.5, available to download at the App Store. Here are some of the improvements: * Drawing updates: select and move existing drawings, a new eraser, and an improved export flow for better PDF compatibility * Batch export: export all charts in the app all at once to a zip file for easy backup * Stability and reliability: many bugs and crashes have been fixed to improve overall app reliability
  • Great app for charting

I’m new to the Nashville Number system and had been writing charts out by hand. Now that I have others to play with, I’m using this app to make cleaner charts and quickly send them via email. Switching to the letter names is a HUGE feature - perfect for when you have musicians not accustomed to the number system.

My only feature request would be text annotations, and the ability to insert a time signature change. Definitely check this one out!

    Developer Response

Hi weirdsbeach, I'm so glad you like the app! Thanks for the good review! We also would like to have moveable text boxes. That would be very cool It is definitely on the list for a new V2 that will be coming out later this year. I hear what you're saying about time signature changes. In Nashville, most time sig changes are for an extra half measure or so at the end of a phrase. For example, when a song in 6/8 has and extra measure of 3/8, instead of changing TS to 3/8 and then again back to 6/8, you put 3 hash marks over the bar and box it in if you like. However, with a song that changes from 4/4 to 3/4, for example, you would have to handwrite the TS change. Check out my FB page for some examples of charts that have what we're talking about.
