Version History of BandHelper

September 29, 2024

* Added Photo Scale, Icon Scale and Text Scale settings to the stage plot Edit Details page to help lay out complex stage plots more neatly. * Added a Text item to stage plots to allow placing a standalone text label anywhere on the page. This text will be italicized to distinguish it from item labels. • Updated the Performer items on stage plots to allow overriding the performer's name. • Set a default name for new in-app recordings, which you can override if you wish. • Set the event name to the set list name by default when adding an event from the set list Edit Details page. This makes it easier to archive undated set lists by adding an event with the desired archive date. • Added a warning if you paste lyrics that include square brackets around non-chord text. • If Personal Transpose is set for a song but Show Roman Numerals is on but the Key is not set, revert to the Personal Transpose function. • Updated the Capitalize Lyrics function to retain the correct formatting positions when the lyrics contain the German letter ß. • Fixed a problem where the current text field wouldn't be visible after switching between apps multiple times. • Fixed the functionality of the Settings > General > External Display > Personal Fields setting. • Restored the display of other users' event responses for users who have no editing access but full schedule access. • Fixed the display of performer photos on stage plots. • Restored some missing divider lines between table cells.

• Fixed a problem that cleared the Auto-Download Files ... Smaller Than settings when using the Sync Now button in the Sync Status window. This app version restores those settings to the default values. If you want Auto-Download Files to be off or Smaller Than to be greater than 0, you can go to Settings > Account Sync and set your preferred values again now. • Fixed a problem where the date didn't save when adding an event from a + button on the calendar page. • Fixed issues with copying an event. • Disabled the Copy button for events that have multiple date options. • When using the Auto-Fit To Page setting on the set list Share Songs page, stopped shrinking the Chords text, unless even the Chords text without the Lyrics text is too long to fit. • Updated the formatting of headings in the Lyrics field to use the lyrics font, not the chords font. • Improved the synchronization of audio recordings when playing more than four recordings together. • Updated the items in the Action Items list to navigate correctly when viewed from the set list view. • Updated Sync Status window to refresh the Sync Status when resetting the local data.

* Renamed the Set Lists button in the Add Songs popup window to Lists and changed its functionality to select from smart lists as well as set lists. Also, added All and None buttons to the Add Songs window. These changes allow you to copy an entire smart list or a portion of a smart list into a set list. * Added an option for a Quick MIDI button in the top toolbar of the set list view. If you enable this on the Edit Details page of your layout, you can use the Quick MIDI button to send any MIDI preset directly, regardless of which presets are attached to the songs in your set list. * Added support for multiple event dates and times to automate inquiring about different options for an event. You can click Add a Date/Time Option on the event edit page to add date and time options, then turn on the Require Response setting. When your bandmates view the event, they'll see all the date/time options and can respond (Accept, Maybe or Decline) to each option. When you see a consensus, you can click Use This Option to remove the other options, then turn on the Confirmed setting to notify everyone of the final date and time. * Added a Reason For Your Response field to the event edit page when you select Maybe or Declined for an event that requires a response. You can use this to briefly explain why you're not accepting an event. For example, when selecting Maybe you could explain that you'll know for sure in 24 hours, or when selecting Declined you could explain that you'd like to play that venue but aren't available on that date. Only account administrators will see your reason. • Added a conflict check when you add an event or change the date or users of an existing event. A warning will now appear if an event already exists with the same date and users. You can then edit or delete the new event, or override the warning and continue saving. • Added Skip Recording Back/Forward and Set Recording Loop Start/End actions to the Settings > App Control page. Note that the recording loop function is meant for practicing and is not accurate enough for performing. • Added Settings > Advanced > Trigger Song Completion From Duration, which is on by default for existing accounts. If you turn this off, song completion actions will only be triggered from the end of a recording, video or automation track. • Updated the main menu shortcuts to show all the set lists for an upcoming event if multiple set lists are attached to the same event. • Updated the Finance > Transactions list to use the date added as a secondary sort, so multiple transactions on the same date will appear in the order you entered them. • Simplified the Sync Status window, since the Settings > Account Sync window is now available from anywhere in the app. • On phones, moved the Done, Select and Cancel buttons for the on-screen keyboard and picker from the top toolbar to the space just above the keyboard or picker. On phones with smaller screens, this takes the place of some of the chord symbol buttons on the Lyrics, Chords and Notes fields. • Improved vertical scrolling of documents and lyrics when Settings > Advanced > Use New Scroll Logic is on. • Restored the previous functionality of broadcasting the intermediate scroll positions through Live Sharing during a manual scroll of the document or lyrics, unless Settings > Advanced > Broadcast Mid-Scroll Positions is off. • Improved the alignment of the recording loop region bar against the recording progress bar. • Stopped placing bracketed chords above lyrics in the Chords field, because the Chords field is not intended to contain lyrics. However, you can still use square brackets around chords in the Chords field to ensure chord recognition, as an alternative to placing parentheses around non-chord text. • Fixed a crash when transposing chords that use bar lines but only have one bar on a line. • Turned on Play Audio In Background and Let Other Apps Play Audio In Background by default for new installations.

* Added Settings > Advanced > Use New Swipe Logic to make horizontal swiping in the set list view and calendar view smoother and more intuitive. You can also adjust the swipe sensitivity with the Less Sensitive Swipes and More Sensitive Swipes settings. You will need to leave and reenter the set list view or calendar view for these settings to take effect. Please send feedback if you try them. • Updated the new Settings popup window to update document and audio functions without needing to reload the page. • Updated the new Heading function in the Lyrics field to work on lines that start with a marker. • Updated the More Buttons layout template for phones to include a tempo button and a recording button instead of the transpose buttons. • Fixed the Display Screen From and Follow Actions From buttons when accessed from the Settings > Live Sharing page. • Updated the edit pages so that selecting a field will move it into view after the on-screen keyboard appears. • Updated smart lists to allow filtering by no rating (rating equals 0). • Added an Include In iCalendar Feed setting to the custom field edit page. • Renamed the Public setting on the event edit page to Include In Website Widget.

* Replaced the app notifications function with operating system push notifications. These will appear in your device's notification center instead of within the app, and then clicking a notification will open the app to the relevant page. This makes app notifications a good alternative to SMS notifications if you're having trouble with spam filtering. However, app notifications will only appear on devices where you have the app installed and you haven't disabled the notification permission. ! Added your email, phone and other notification settings to the Settings > General page, so you can adjust these without logging into the website. ! Changed the Notifications list that appears when clicking the alert icon in the top toolbar to an Action Items list. This list now shows events that are waiting for your response, contact actions that are due and checklist items that are due. Also, changed the alert icons next to project names in the Accounts list, and the numbered app badge, to indicate these action items instead of unread notifications. • Added large response buttons near the top of the event edit page when the event is waiting for your response. • Added notification icons to the Checklists list and the main menu shortcuts for checklists that have waiting items. • Fixed the handling of bandhelper:// URLs from a text message to correctly open a specific page within the app. * Added the ability to mark headings in the Lyrics and Chords fields with a # character. If you place this at the start of a line, the rest of the line will display with the heading size, color and style you set on the Settings > Appearance page. You can optionally place spaces before the # to indent the heading. Spaces between the # and the heading text will be ignored. • Updated the transpose function to retain alignment of bar lines (| characters) even when repeated beats aren't marked with dashes. This allows a more horizontally condensed chord chart that can be sized larger without wrapping lines. • Fixed the alignment of ChordPro chords within right-to-left text. ! Moved the Settings button from the Accounts list to the top toolbar so you can access the settings more quickly from anywhere in the app. If this results in more buttons than you want in the top toolbar, you can hide any you're not using from Settings > Appearance > Top Toolbar Buttons. Also moved the Apps list to the Repertoire menu and the Totals Report to the Help > Utilities menu. • Added Settings > Appearance > Highlight Multiple Button Names to highlight the button icons and names in multiple MIDI, document, recording and marker buttons instead of just the icons. • Removed the contact buttons from the Contacts list when the list is narrower than 360 pixels, and from the Actions and Checklists lists in all cases, to make the list contents easier to read. You can still access the contact buttons from contact or action edit pages by clicking an item in the Contacts or Actions list. • Sorted actions on the contact edit page from newest to oldest to match the website. • Fixed a crash when selecting different users on the event edit page. • Stopped fading uneditable documents, recordings and MIDI presets on the song, event, contact and transaction edit pages, so make it more clear that you can still view them even if you can't edit them. • Disabled the Image button in the formatting toolbar when the song has no JPEG documents attached. • Set the Width In Lyrics to 100% by default when adding a new document. • Fixed the Users setting for set lists in Basic accounts. • Fixed the button colors in the print popup on the document and file edit pages.

* Added the ability to embed JPG images into the Lyrics field. You can attach images to the Documents section of a song, then go to the Lyrics field, click the desired location, click the Image button and select the desired image. By default, the image will be sized to fill the width of the document viewer, but you can make it smaller by changing the Width In Lyrics setting on the document edit page. You can assign embedded images to specific users as with other documents. When an image is embedded into the Lyrics field, it will not appear in the Document button or from the Next/Previous Document functions. * Changed how standard layouts are added to new accounts. The first time you open a new account in the app, instead of prompting you to select a layout template, $site_name will automatically add a landscape and portrait layout from the More Buttons template. Also, instead of those initial layouts being assigned only to you, they will be assigned to everyone in your account. This means everyone in the account will have a layout to use without having to make any selections or change any settings. You can still add different layouts using the other layout templates, and those additional layouts will still be assigned only to you by default. • Updated the MIDI Controller Messages options on the Settings > App Control page to allow triggering an action from any MIDI controller number. The only exceptions are CC 0 and CC 32 (bank MSB and LSB), which can only be used with incoming program change messages. • Updated every instance of a song's Tags field to display in the tag sort order. • Updated the Capitalize Text setting on the document viewer to stop capitalizing bracketed text or chord lines. • Updated the external display functionality to use all the current document viewer's settings if you connect the external display after viewing a set list. • Fixed the alignment of the Lyrics field on an eternal display when its alignment is set to Centered or Reversed. • Fixed the initial alignment of the Lyrics and Notes fields when their alignment is set to Centered or Reversed. • Fixed the Alignment option on time fields in song layouts. • Fixed a problem that left the tempo playing if you changed to a song with no tempo while the previous song's tempo was still playing and Settings > App Control > Actions > Start Tempo was set to Song Selection. • Fixed a problem that stopped the new recording at the end of the outgoing recording if you start a cross fade closer to the end of the outgoing recording than the cross fade duration. • Fixed a crash when playing a recording attached to a song in the ninth position or greater. • Added a default value of 5% for Settings > App Control > Scroll Document Down ... By Amount. • When changing the users on an event with pay shares entered, stopped clearing all the shares. • Fixed a crash when a user with full viewing access but no editing access edits an event they are not assigned to that has user shares.

• Fixed a problem where the Play Recording automation events and app control actions didn't play multiple recordings together when the layout includes the Multiple Recording Buttons. • Fixed the Next Page/Marker Or Song and Previous Page/Marker Or Song app control actions when the document viewer is shown on an external display but not the main display. • Fixed a crash when clicking Increase Tempo or Decrease Tempo from the tempo button options. • Fixed the Sort Songs by Tag option on the set list Edit Songs page. • Fixed a redundant row of labels that appeared when sharing some set lists. • Added Settings > App Control > Wrap Next/Previous Songs and Wrap Next/Previous Attachments. You can use these to control whether the Next/Previous Song, Document, Recording and MIDI Preset functions wrap around to the first or last item. For backwards compatibility, Wrap Next/Previous Attachments is on in existing installations. Otherwise, both settings are off by default. • Added Settings > Advanced > Allow Automation End to Change Songs During Playback.

* Replaced Settings > Audio & MIDI > Audio Options > Play Two Recordings Together with Play Recordings Together, which can select up to 8 recordings to play together. You can change this setting to play different combinations of recordings for different situations, like adding a drum track only when a drummer is not available. If you add the Master Volume item to your layout, you can also adjust a volume slider for each recording. Any of the recordings can be MIDI sound files (previously you could only play one MIDI sound file at a time) and can have MIDI data files attached (previously you could only play one MIDI data file at a time). Audio recordings can be mono or stereo. To start playing multiple recordings, you can use the single Recording button, the recording controls or the Start Recording app control action; the multiple recording buttons will only play individual recordings. When Play Recordings Together is set, Settings > General > Defaults > Recording will be ignored. * Added Settings > Audio & MIDI > Recording Position Labels. These labels will appear in the Play Recordings Together picker for easy reference, and will appear in the recording buttons in your layouts instead of the recording names if you also turn on Show Labels In Recording Buttons. You can use these settings to show simplified names like "Click Track" and "Drum Track" on all your songs instead of song-specific names like "Freebird click -2" and "Proud Mary click track." * Added Settings > Audio & MIDI > Cross Fade Recordings. If you set a number of seconds here, then play a recording while a previous recording is still playing, the two recordings will cross fade over the duration you set. This will work between recordings attached to the same song, or between recordings from different songs if you turn on Settings > Audio & MIDI > Continue Audio When Changing Songs. • Renamed the Master Volume layout item to Volume Controls. • Added a slider for the video volume to the Volume Controls layout item. • Added a setting for Set List Stats to the layout details edit page, to show the set list duration and song count in the top toolbar of the set list view. • Fixed a problem where a break couldn't be selected when the song list contains MIDI buttons, the main layout area does not and the App Controls are set to send MIDI on song selection. • Updated Settings > Appearance > Hide Parentheses in Chord Lines to ignore parentheses in non-chord lines. • Fixed a problem where the new recording wouldn't play if you played a recording from the single recording button or recording controls, then selected a different recording from the multiple recording buttons without pausing first. • Updated the recording waveforms to redraw when changing layouts, and to fill an area wider than 1024 pixels. • Updated the MIDI Learn function to match incoming data to a device regardless of its port name as long as it is the only device using the same channel. • Updated the MIDI Learn function to add new rows as control change messages are received, so you can capture more than one control change at a time for the same device. • Fixed a problem that disabled the Copy button initially on the transaction edit page. • Added Settings > Live Sharing > Share Actions > Follow Account Syncing, to start a sync on the following devices whenever the lead device syncs. If all your devices are connected to the Internet, you can use this to automatically update the following devices when you edit data on the lead device. • Restored the automatic refresh of the set list view after syncing.

* Added the ability to pin documents, recordings or MIDI presets to breaks or pauses using the Pinned to All Breaks and Pinned to All Pauses settings on the respective edit pages. To see buttons for the pinned items on the break or pause pages, you can turn on Settings > Advanced > Show Song Buttons on Breaks and Pauses. You can also call the pinned items from app control actions. When you pin documents to a break or pause, the break or pause name and details will appear initially, but you can use the document button or the next/previous document hot spots to view the documents. You can also display the break or pause name and details on the main screen and the pinned document on an external screen using Settings > General > External Display > Content > Doc +1. The Pinned filter on the Documents, Recordings and MIDI Presets lists will show items pinned to songs, breaks or pauses. * Added a count off function to automatically start a recording or trigger other functions after some tempo clicks or flashes. This functionality was previously only available by creating an automation track for each song. To use this new approach, you can set Settings > App Control > Actions > Count Off to a trigger like Layout Actions > Song Selection, then set the actions you want to trigger to Layout Actions > Count Off Completion. Then set Settings > Tempo & Pitch > Tempo Options > Count Off Bars to the desired length, and make sure you have entered tempos for your songs. If you are starting recordings from a count off and a recording doesn't start on the downbeat, you can edit the recording and set the Pickup Length so the recording starts at the correct time before the downbeat. • Fixed a problem where sliders on the Settings pages didn't save unless something else on the page was changed. • Removed an extra row of labels from the first page of a shared set list. • Fixed a problem where the Copy To Clipboard button on the Share Set List page became inactive after changing the output settings.

• Fixed a crash when sharing a smart list that is sorted by anything other than the Tags field. • Fixed the transposing function when Settings > Appearance > Hide Parentheses In Chord Lines is on. • Stopped reloading the current song when syncing after editing document annotations, to avoid scrolling the document to the top. • Updated the View Document, Start Recording and Send MIDI functions to ignore the last selected item if it was a pinned item. • When paging through lyrics with markers in a 2-column presentation, stopped when the last page is in the right column when there are an even number of pages. • When playing the same video on the main screen and an external screen, muted the audio of the video playing on the main screen to avoid an out-of-phase sound effect. • Updated the set list share function so that when column labels are on and a set spans multiple pages, the labels are repeated at the top of each page. • Displayed the MIDI preset colors on the song edit page, the layout MIDI buttons and the automation track edit page. • Added the recording controls to the More Buttons layout template and renamed the More Controls layout template to Expanded Buttons. • Fixed problems when moving or changing the parent of a checklist item that has child items. • Disabled the external display settings when the external display content is set to Mirror, to indicate that those settings aren't available when mirroring, and disabled the audio channel settings when multi-route audio is off. • Improved the app responsiveness when opening an account or downloading missing files.

  • The Best!

I have been using Band Helper for years, in various bands and now with a worship team. As an IT professional myself, I may have a bit more of a discerning eye for apps than most people. Band Helper is a great app, for sure, but what makes it really great is the developer. I recently had a fairly esoteric issue with the transpose function on one of my iPads which is on an earlier version than my other iPads. I submitted a help ticket, and the response I received was terrific. Every day, sometimes several times a day, I would get responses as we were working thru the issue which was resolved in about a week. So refreshing to see a developer genuinely interested in supporting their product! 5 stars for sure! I will be a Band Helper user for life! Did I mention the app is terrific and full featured?? :)

  • Does what it says!

I haven’t used any other similar stage plot apps, so I can’t really compare it with any of the others. I’m a longtime user of BandHelper and love it so I figured this app would be good as well and I was not disappointed. Like any other app, it takes a couple of minutes to figure it out with a little trial and error here and there but in a short time I was up and running and had a professional looking stage plot. I recommend this app! Thanks, Arlo.

  • Outstanding!

Do yourself a favor and get this app! So many useful tools! I absolutely rely on it for every aspect of my gigging and practicing. Been a sub for many years now and have never regretted it. Only way I could benefit from it more is if I would utilize the MIDI functionality and the Finance portion. Two aspects I haven’t tried out yet, but might, some day.
