Fuelbetter's first update! With this update, you'll now be able to view & edit more profile settings -- including HRmax, HRrest, and VO2max, which are important for quantifying the nutrients lost during your workouts. (If you don't know these particular settings, don't worry -- we'll continue to estimate them for you.) We've also added "toast" messaging in the app (little messages that pop up and disappear), and we've laid the groundwork for our next update by integrating the Facebook SDK and Firebase SDK, which will allow us to give you the ability to sign-up & sign-in using Facebook, Google, Twitter & more.

Description of Fuelbetter

NEXT-GENERATION NUTRITION TRACKING & ANALYSIS Fuelbetter track calories, macros, and 170+ other nutrients & bioactive substances accurately. This complete, holistic view of your nutrition, combined with Fuelbetter's ground-breaking digital dietitian, empowers you to achieve your dietary, health, and performance goals, whatever they are: ∙ Faster exercise recovery & performance ∙ Lasting weight loss ∙ Pregnancy health ∙ Shifting to a plant-based diet without losing out on important nutrients ∙ Immune system support ∙ & more... Fuelbetter’s team of software engineers, data scientists, dietitians, and sports scientists have spent years developing the proprietary technology that makes the app possible. The end result is revolutionary: FOUR WORLD-FIRST functionalities which can help you take control of your health like never before. 1. PRECISELY CALCULATE YOUR BIOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS Fuelbetter calculates your unique nutrient requirements using techniques normally reserved for elite athletes. The one-size-fits-all RDAs (average daily allowances) communicated by public health authorities aren't right for many of us. Not only that, but requirements can shift suddenly during moments of life change, such as pregnancy, taking on a new physical challenge, starting a weight loss journey, or going vegan. Take iron: A woman following a paleo diet who exercises little may have a dietary iron need of 4mg/day, while another woman of the same height and weight but following a vegan diet and training as an endurance runner may need 100mg/day. That’s a big difference – equivalent to the amount of iron in 3.5kg (8 lbs) of spinach! 2. TEST FOR 164 NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES/EXCESSES Fuelbetter monitors your nutrient intake throughout the day, compares this to your nutrient requirements, and checks for the presence of any nutritional deficiencies or excesses. Historically, only blood tests could offer this level of insight, at an average cost of a restaurant meal (or more) per nutrient. Fuelbetter tests for 170+ nutrients in real time, at a fraction of the cost. 3. ON-DEMAND DIGITIAL NUTRITIONIST Once you’ve identified any problem areas in your diet, Fuelbetter’s powerful digital nutritionist suggests exactly what to eat to hit your nutrient requirements. Rather than complicated new recipes and obscure ingredients, you’ll see meal suggestions based on foods you’re already eating. If you don’t like the first suggestion, just swipe left and to get another suggestion instantly. 4. SEE THE HEALTH & CLIMATE IMPACT OF YOUR CHOICES Just in case you need any further motivation, Fuelbetter measures the real time impact of your food choices on your immune health, the health of the planet, and your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other diet-related non-communicable diseases. • First day use disappointing

I got the app and tried entering food for breakfast. I had a three-egg omelette. That’s not a choice, so I thought I would “add” it by ingredients. No. “Add” means that (instead of scanning the bar code) you type what you’re looking for in the drop down menu. I chose “eggs”. Note, no option to say how many, but judging from the preset numbers assigned to “eggs,” I assume it mist correspond to two large. Next, I tried adding tomatoes. Unfortunately, the app didn’t recognize the bar code that the “Mucci Farms ‘Sun Drops’ tomatoes” came in. I’m back to “adding,” i.e., “searching our drop down menu,” for what I ate. I select the one that most nearly corresponds to what I ate. I try to adjust the numbers assigned, get the number of grams right, all to no avail. Note if you change the serving size or any other number—none of the other numbers change: 5 grams? 100 grams? No problem. Your calories are still the same. I had hoped to use this app like I had used SparkPeople years ago before they messed up their program. But no. This app, for my purposes at least, appears to “useless as the teats on a boar hog,” unless maybe I restrict myself to corn flakes and beef-a-roni. I assume the app can read those bar codes (although getting the quantities right probably will still be a problem. They either need to improve their app (start again from the beginning?), make it more intuitive if I’m so dumb that I can’t figure it out, or make a version for dummies that might work for me. But, this one is useless.

One other thing, on the graph, “nutrients over limit,” it says I am 180 over my “tropical forest impact” allowance. ????! Chicken eggs produced in my back yard? Tomatoes? Onions? That puts me “over” my “tropical rainforest impact?” By 180? 180 what??? I think I am being pranked!

    Developer Response

We're sorry you had a frustrating time using our app. I hope you've found an app that better suits your needs! In answer to your questions: - Like many other food diary apps, you'll need to type to search for a food or scan its barcode. We don't yet provide other techniques (such as taking a photograph), since the accuracy level of these techniques doesn't yet meet our standards. - For any food selected, a default quantity is provided for convenience - but like other food diary apps, it is important to amend the quantity by tapping on the food, and editing the quantity on the individual food edit page. Note: when a food quantity is edited, this does not immediately change the values shown on the individual food edit screen, but it will be reflected on the main diary screen. - "Tropical rain forest impact" is a measure of how food choices directly - or indirectly - contribute to tropical rainforest loss. "Eggs" are high on the impact list, because hens (and other poultry) are typically fed a diet which includes soybean meal - most of which comes from farms in Brazil created by deforestation of the Amazon. That is the industry-standard "egg" or "poultry product". If you know your hens are fed soybean-free diets, or the soybean meal in their diets is "rainforest friendly", then your egg consumption will have a zero tropical rainforest impact. - I hope that helps! If you have any further questions, please reach out to us at hello@fuelbetter.co, and we'll be happy to help.
