So you’ve gone from an app with lots of free storage to an app where our photos simply cannot be transferred from Lifecake to BackThen as our photos take up more than 1gb and so you are trying to force us to pay a £3.99 monthly fee. Sorry I don’t think so. Had we reached our existing Lifecake storage limit we would have considered paying for more storage, but we hadn’t and had only used 44% of our free allowance. We are not going to be forced to pay just because of whatever corporate issues have gone on with Lifecake/Canon, and so we will look for an alternative. RIP Lifecake.

EDIT: the developers say they aren’t linked in any way to the owners of Lifecake! What Lifecake recommended BackThen it was sold as from the developers of Lifecake!! It is not a new all, it is a rehashed Lifecake but with excessive fees. Thanks Lifecake/BackThen.

BackThen was created to give parents and their families an alternative to having to move away from the experience they have grown used to. We are self-funded. We understand this price difference is really tough for some to stomach, particularly in this horrible period of global pandemic uncertainty. But regrettably we need to ensure the business is viable and that we can keep the lights on.

Wholeheartedly agree with DK’s Mom

Been using LifeCake for going on 5 years and one day I woke up to the news that it’s shutting down on June 30th and I am no longer able to upload photos of my children. I uploaded photos only yesterday not knowing this would happen. To continue, I must subscribe BackThen app for $4.99 per month. Just like that. No warning. And, this happened at the worst time possible for the families who depend on such photos to help them go through COVID-19 pandemic. I am so disgusted that I can’t even think about signing up for BackThen knowing what they are capable of. 5 years of photos. Lost. Unfathomable and unacceptable.

Lifecake sold out

I was a huge fan of Lifecake but this app only allows you 1GB of free storage before charging $5/month to store and share your photos. I don’t use lifecake very often and I had over 3GBs of photos and videos shared with the grandparents. It’s 2020, 1 GB is nothing. Deleting both apps and moving on to another service.

Developer responded and said BackThen is a totally new company. It looks and smells a lot like LifeCake. Fact of the matter is LifeCake is shutting down and is directing users to BackThen. Regardless of if it is a new company or not (which I’m inclined to believe it is directly affiliated with LifeCake), The whole thing still shows disregard for the consumer and just another way to make even more money. I would’ve stuck around if the company decided to bolster their revenue from ads but I’m not shelling out $60/year, which will inevitably increase

When the decision was made to close Lifecake, the original founders decided – rather than let the memories in Lifecake fade away – to quickly build an independent new app to replace it. BackThen. The company is 100% owned by the founders, with no association to Lifecake's parent company.

Love it!

As a customer who was nearing the end of free storage on LifeCake, the price was not an issue. Migration went smoothly and having the same look and feel as LifeCake was a huge plus as it flattens the learning curve with older family members. Thanks for making it easy to move over and hope that Back Then will be around for the long haul!

Disappointed - Need a refund for Lifecake

I’m not sure what you’re trying to do here. BackThen is IDENTICAL to Lifecake. Are you just trying to swindle people out of money? I had paid for an annual subscription on Lifecake and now I have to start up a new monthly subscription with BackThen? If you’re going to do that you have to give people a prorated refund for the other app.

I have contacted Apple and they can’t issue a refund because I started the subscription too long ago.

Please prove to me and others reading this that you’re not trying to steal our money by reaching out to me with a solution. I will update my review at that time.

Fantastic Photo Archiving App for Parents

Intuitive, slick photo and video archiving app that allows family to share photos in a secure, private space that allows parents, grandparents, and others to comment, add content, and have a photo archive with them whenever they want to access it. Allows large photo/video uploads as well as provides access to download your archive whenever you want. Formerly Lifecake - which was unfortunately downsized by the parent company during the pandemic of 2020 - the staff even made the transition of 100s of gigabytes of photos from the former app to this one seamless and relatively rapid. Have been an active user of Lifecake -> BackThen for 4 years and highly recommend it.

No storage

I went from having used 5% of storage on Lifecake to 55% on this... disappointing

Refund of Lifecake membership?

I just purchased a yearly subscription to Lifecake only to be told it’s ceasing to exist and replacing with this. When I go to import everything over to this it wants to charge me a new monthly fee, so I’m getting charged twice? Are you refunding the lifecake memberships?
So one star for now but will change once sorted
Also feedback...BackThen... terrible name. This is a fun app, should have a fun name. Lifecake was a good name, BackThen is boring and confusing, Back when?

Lifecake have assured us that (1) pro-rated refunds are already being processed, and (2) all parents will be provided with 'Download All' links to retrieve their memories within the next 10 days.

Money grab

Pretty appalling that we’re all of a sudden having to pay so much more money for an app which is EXACTLY the same as Lifecake. Just a cheap money grab with absolutely no improvements made. Disappointing after using this app for our kids for so many years

Import glitch? More money? While quarantined from family??

I and my family love Lifecake so when I saw the notice today I immediately wanted to switch over so family could continue to see my daily updates of my kids...this quarantine has been really tough on all of us, especially the grandparents. So I download the app, create an account and begrudgingly sign up for the $5/month fee. It says the import will “take a while”...I’m at 8 hours and counting and the app is still stuck on the import screen despite an email saying everything is complete. Now what??
