  • Fun, but strategy is thrown out the window

Fun game, and personally I disagree with the people complaining about monetization- it’s easy to build your roster and club provided the contract lengths/other in-game purchases without spending for additional bucks.

However, the fact that defense is unplayable leaves a massive issue imo. It feels like the enemy AI is more concerned with just launching the ball to half-field every time they steal the ball away. As soon as the ball crosses, or some time after when possession is not immediate, the game basically pauses and says “Ok AI now has a turn to take free shots/possession on your goal”

That concept worked fine in Retro Bowl, but not in soccer, where the gameplay is still going on during the moment of possession change. The AI shouldn’t be allowed to just punt the ball to an empty field, or launch it straight to my goalie with no one even on that half of the field without letting me play it out.

I assume it’s because the enemy AI has no actual shooting mechanic- but there should be a requirement that the enemy touch and have control of the ball in my half of the field before the forced possession change.

  • Retro Bowl for fans of REAL football

First things first: You owe it to yourself to plunk down a dollar for the full version. You won’t regret it.

New Star Games took what worked for Retro Bowl and applies it near flawlessly to the beautiful game, giving you enough teams and leagues to hold you over for a while even without an official license. The in-match controls only require a couple of games at most to get down pat, and the simple manager interface will still give you a bit to think about: Want to sign that star player that could put your club over the top? You’d better have facilities and a stadium to match if you want to keep him for long.

Two thoughts for the developers, which are basically nitpicking in nature but does hold it back from 5 stars: I would love to see a Dynamic difficulty setting a la Retro Bowl (harder if you win, easier if you lose, stable if you draw). Also, Global Championship would REALLY benefit from including regional qualifying, although I do concede that working this in would be a project in itself for NSG.

But those are minor issues. If you have any level of interest in the world’s most popular sport, get this game. Period. And consider stop lights to be suggestions.

Retro goal is one of the best mobile games I have played and I love how fluid the gameplay feels. Some things I think would add to the game is if it were given a little more personality and variety. For example all 5 star players have the same stats for their positions and the only difference between them are their appearance or special traits if they have one. I think it would be beneficial to add a few more stat types to differentiate and make the players more special. Also in game positioning is a bit awkward players just run where you are putting the ball instead of making actual runs like in a real game. It would be a cool addition if players had their own moves when you dribble with them or special celebrations. I also think that it would be easy to instill defense into the game which would be huge in giving the player more of a day with what happens in matches. International soccer and the addition of the word cup would also be another positive to put in. Glory across all leagues is something to strive for but everyone’s dream is to walk away from their career holding a World Cup.

  • Fun up to a point

Roster/team building part of the game is great. Really enjoy that it can take quite a while to build a juggernaut as opposed to Retro Bowl where you can do it in two off-seasons. Gameplay experience is… just ok. Hard mode is fairly challenging at first because your players are slow, so you have to make a lot of passes. But you have some margin for error. Once that becomes too easy, though, all you’re left with is extreme difficulty which from my experience so far requires incredibly precise passing and almost immediate reactions. I probably wouldn’t bother if your roster isn't full of 4 to 5* (or super fast if worse than that) players. This is the same issue Retro Bowl had, although I find extreme much easier in that game. Devs need to find a happy medium in terms of difficulty, which could honestly be achieved by just making it harder to score when you shoot toward the top of the screen.

  • Great gameplay

Hi, I love the gameplay in this. It’s one of the most fun sports games to play in my opinion.

Some suggestions I have for improvement is to have a stats page where you can see player stats side by side instead of one at a time. Also, it would be simpler to have the contract length of a player written out as time remaining on contract and not by year and month. I also wish that the auto-pick feature weighted condition level higher when picking the starters, but it’s still a good feature in general. Also, a budget screen would be helpful for season-long planning because it can be easy to get caught out and forget that a players contract is coming to an end after spending money on the stadium or training.

  • Like the game but some problems

Once I got over a few problems I’ve had fun with the game. Now I just have a few problems first being players not wanting to join my club because my training building isn’t high enough level. This is annoying because I’ll have my training builder at a pretty high level but I still have to pay more and wait 2-3 weeks for it to be upgraded. Another problems I have is I will be playing a mess up and lose my chance. Then the other team will score (usually 1 time but I’ve had up to 3 times) and with that I might mess up at the 80 th minute and the other team will score and I won’t be able to play again and the game will end which is kind of annoying. (An example of this is a game where I was up by 3 in the 31 minute and I didn’t touch the ball again until the 73 minute and it was tied) Also the other team will kick it and my player will be about to get it and it will say chance missed. This is extremely annoying because a lot of the time it loses me the game or I will tie because I just lost a chance to score. But overall a pretty good game.

  • Awesome game but needs a few ideas

After purchasing the unlimited version of the game I set out to become the best team in the league. After a shaky first season I bought a high rated forward and this is when things changed. With one good fast goal scorer on your team, you can almost score every time. After realizing this I upgraded the defense and set out to be #1. After just 2 more seasons I had completely dominated the liga league. I had around 5000 saved up for when I moved onto the premiere league. After simply one season I had taken my team to the top of the premiere league. At this point I wasn’t sure what to do. I had dominated every league I was in and now I was the champion of a world-class league. What I would tell the developers is, maybe make it so that instead of picking a team and taking a job I wish that once you had become champion of a league that it should send you to a higher level league. Once you’ve beaten most of the lower level leagues then send them to the premiere league. It just seems odd I can go straight from a low level league to the premiere league and dominate from the start. There needs to be more linear progression imo.

  • Good gameplay, but not worth the monetization

I was excited to try out this game as i love retro bowl. It is truly one of the best sports games on mobile. However, when I downloaded the app i was very disappointed to see the attempt to monetize the app. Although the fee isn’t large it is still an obvious cash grab. Retro bowl is perfect with its Premium that you can pay for and it gives Free To Play players an option to enjoy the game without spending pocket money. I gave the review four stars because although the game was an obvious attempt to get cash to the devs, i truly enjoyed the game with the 10 free games i got to play. The gameplay was immersive and i enjoyed the game a lot! Don’t make the mistake of throwing away an opportunity for a great game with a big audience by monetizing the game with a paywall. The game has so much opportunity so it is truly a mistake to make players pay for the whole game.

  • Executed poorly

The concept of this game is incredible but the creators really botched its execution. The whole thing is rigged against you on purpose, the game bullies you into wanting to buy the “upgraded” version because your team is absolutely trash in the beginning. Even when you’re able to see progression in your teams stats the odds will always be against you in certain games. If any team has any offense better than your defense they will score on any turnover 98% of the time. This means every time you score they are extremely likely to score as well and if for any reason it’s turned over, you’ve now trapped yourself in a corner because they are almost guaranteed to score. It also doesn’t matter how good your offense is, if the other teams defense is better than 2 stars they can almost always keep up with your fastest player and will be ready to intercept the ball at any given moment.

I’m sure once you’ve played the game a lot the stats of your team will be good enough but there is no sense of real progression because you get beaten all the way there and until that point there will always be a couple of teams who are practically unbeatable.

  • Fun but why can’t you play a however long you want

I just started playing and the game is really fun and enjoyable when you get the controls down but why do you have to spend money to keep playing your save I wouldn’t have an issue with this game if you didn’t have to spend money to keep playing I can understand if it’s players and in game currency but you want the people to keep coming back and playing so why restrict that it makes this game not free to play it’s like a free demo and then you have to spend a dollar to keep going if that’s the case then why not just price the game as a dollar in the app store instead of saying it’s free then forcing them to spend a dollar for the rest of your ability to play what I enjoyed about retro bowl is that you could build a god squad without having to spend money but now your forced to spend money just to play the game and that confuses me great game though just make it free
