Amazing App!

I’d always hoped there would be a simple, yet highly functional, mobile text editor. Runestone is perfect, and there is not much locked behind paywalls. I would wish that there were more apps like this!

More languages

I love the app but many of the languages I hoped to use it for are missing: assembly (x86, WAT), Objective-C, Kotlin, etc...
I would love a feature to add custom or missing languages by defining a list of syntactic rules, a feature I would happily pay for premium to use

App is Sluggish Under iPadOS 18

I used to really like this editor. I've been using the free version for a few months now, and it's a nice, cozy, "no frills" alternative to Apple Notes. It's the closest thing to having NotePad++ on my machine as I can get, and I've been enjoying the features I do use. However, I recently updated to iPadOS 18 and, since then, the app has been kind of laggy and sluggish.

Prior to getting iPadOS 18, the app would open quietly and go straight to the file selection menu. Now, however, it opens to this screen with a blown-up icon scrolling vertically upward, hangs there and lags my iPad for a couple of seconds, and then opens the file selection menu on the bottom half of the screen rather than the entire screen. This makes me not want to use this particular app, anymore, since I can no longer quickly hop in, jot something down, and hop out.

I have no real complaints beyond that. It crashes on occasion when deleting, undoing, or redoing… but that's more acceptable than this new startup sequence. I really dislike it that much.

Worth the Premium

I never buy premium as I can usually find open source software and apps to fit my needs, but this is an excellent editor that I can tell the developer put a lot of effort into creating so I will gladly support their efforts!

Best I have found for iPadOS so far

I am a long time coder. I have been coding since the late 1980s. A large part of my programming has been done using text editors. With the advent of and convenience of the iPad and the iPadOS I have been looking for a useable text editor. Notepad is good, but it is not really for plain text. None of the others I have tried have come close to my go to Mac text editor of Bare Bones. But Runestone is about as close as I am going to get on the iPad. So it was and is worth the premium. An excellent job done on a solid app.

Stop working after iOS update

This was my favourite iPhone text editor, but I think after updating my iOS now, I cannot open any file from my local SMB shared file anymore, I can see the folder I can select and duplicate the file, but when I try to click on the file, nothing happens.

Runestone is an excellent no-distraction tool for writers

More and more, I’ve been using Runestone with my Apple Vision Pro to write: scenes for my novel as well as other short-form writing. I’ve tweaked the Appearance and other Settings so that it looks more like a bare-bones writing app instead of a code editor. I save my document in Markdown format, which makes it super-easy to import into Obsidian, where I can continue working on it. Using Runestone instead of a regular writing app helps me focus more on WRITING than fussing with settings. I also love that the Premium tier is a one-time purchase, not a subscription fee.
