  • Not a spot meter but works

Caught traveling without a meter and been exploring iPhone meters. This one’s not much use to me bc it has no spot metering. But for a cheap to free app, it’s not bad. Not sure how accurate it is, but it’s probably close enough to get you in the ballpark if you’re shooting old film cameras and not interested in distant shots.

Hi Vermiculite, Thank you for your feedback. Please beware that our app is not a light meter for photography but rather for general applications requiring accurate illuminance (lux / fc) measurements. Therefore, there are no features for spot metering in the app. Given that it’s used correctly (f.e. first of all using a diffuser), I can promise you highly accurate illuminance measurements in case you’ll ever need that 🤓 Best regards, Angela and the Lightray team
  • Great customer service!

Incredibly responsive and helpful company! They were extremely patient with my questions and went out of their way to make the information accessible and understandable.

Hey Light Peter, Thank you so much for this feedback! It's nice to know that our work is appreciated! 🤗🙏 Don't hesitate to contact us again if there's anything we can help you with 😊 All the best, Angela and the Lightray team
  • Annoying

Most annoying app ever. All you get is a message stating diffuser missing which does not allow the app to work. Can not even access in app purchases. Pointless.

    Developer Response

Dear Rob art critic, Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry that you feel that way. It's the laws of physics that a diffuser is needed to measure light. The pop-up is intended as we don't want people to get false data or spend money before they know how the app works. It's quick and easy though to build a diffuser yourself, all you need is a bit of paper and the instructions in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaNiEF_QEmE Best regards, Angela and the Lightray team
  • Waste of time . Won’t work without purchasing diffuser

    Scam

    Developer Response

Hi peterdeez, Thank you for your feedback. It‘s not quite true though. You don‘t have to buy a diffuser for the app to work. You can easily build one yourself in under a minute, as described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07SxrmjSqGc&cc_load_policy=1&v=watch Unfortunately, laws of physics dictate the usage of a diffuser for any method of measuring light. But we feel that with the possibility of the one made out of paper we‘ve found a very easy solution for this issue. Best regards, Angela and the Lightray team
  • Useful app that seems to be accurate

I purchased this app because it was cheaper than buying a dedicated light meter. The app is used to measure light intensity I am exposed to during the morning to ensure that I sleep better at night. I am using an iPhone XR with a thick OtterBox Commuter case. Technical support for the app advised that in this situation, for the diffuser, I should tape a piece of paper over the front camera instead of creating a paper loop. The app is informative and the technical support was helpful.

Hi iDrinkKoolAid Thank you so much for your review and sharing your experience with the community. I’m very glad that the app works so well for you and it makes me proud that we can help people with their sleep! Also it makes me happy to hear that you felt that our support was helpful. Good night, sleep well😴 Angela and the Lightray team
  • Definitely getting something right!

Pointing it up at my plain white ceiling since I don’t have a diffuser. With my lamps on, 200 lux; with my corn bulbs on, 800 lux; with both on, just what you’d want it to say, 1000 lux. So it’s definitely better than I expected.

Hi spencerrose1, Thank you very much for the 5 stars and telling us a bit about how you're using the app. I'm glad you get such satisfactory measurements. For the best and most stable results I still recommend that you use a diffuser. You can make one in less than a minute or get one of our diffuser accessories. See here for more info: https://growlightmeter.com/guides/diffuser-required/ Kind regards, Angela and the Lightray team
  • Good, with caveats

    👍 PROS (functional)

    1) Displays measurement in both Lux and Lumens.

    2) Simple, clear user-interface.

    3) Simple instructions for making home-made diffuser (although I wonder whether heavy white tracing paper better than plain white copier paper?)

    👍 👏 PROS (biz/marketing)

    4) Free trail (albeit unpublicised and very short)

    5) Reasonable one-off payment, no subscription required. (BIG PLUS; who isn't sick of subscriptions for single function / occasional use apps?)

    6) Good privacy policy; another BIG PLUS if yr sick of personal data being stolen and exploited by tech companies.

    👎CONS:

    1) Front camera operation only. Wish it used back camera so I could watch results in real time.

    2) Unclear pricing / trail period. Come on guys. Privacy policy hints at decent company, so why not ignore 'trick the user' trend and just be upfront about trial and cost?

Nobody's digging around in user manual for pricing info.
    Purpose of 'battery' icon unclear.
Even if you read reviews and understand battery icon, it starts off almost 'empty' so it's impossible to gauge how much trial period is left. It's annoying.
    🤔NEUTRAL:

Haven't yet tested accuracy against real (ie physical) light meter. Hope trial lasts long enough to do so. (Update: it didn't).

Happy to pay one-off fee for apps that meet needs and respect privacy. (Why should apps to be free? Developers need to eat!).

🙏 I just like to know about trial periods and costs upfront. 😊

Hi JulTimes2011, Thanks a lot for your thoughtful and honest review! Happy to hear that you like our app and how we do business 😊  Informing about the free trial (which, by the way, will last at least 48 hours) has been a bit of an issue and it seems like we didn't find the optimal solution yet. We have this in our radar and your input helps as well! Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
  • Diffuser Missing - Annoying Pop Up

I haven’t been able to use the app even once with the “Diffuser Missing” pop up.
Why can’t I make it stop? What if I am not looking for super high accuracy? I just need an approximate idea?
Pretty tideous to do all this work to just run an app.

The fact that I would need create or buy an equipment and that I will to buy their app should be mentioned.

Hi Shefali9222, Thanks for your helpful feedback. The diffuser pop up is "annoying" on purpose to make sure the app is used correctly. I understand your desire, yet we don't recommend to use the app (or any incident light meter) without a diffuser. You're right and we'll update our description with such info. I hope this clears things up! Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
  • A Gimmick

All I know is downloading the app and trying to use it really stinks. They almost force you to get the paid version. Trying to use the free version of the app is practically impossible to do. All you can do is turn it on and turn it off, nothing else.
It’s OK, in a year or two Apple will have a Light Meter app built into their iPhones.

Hi ssfsteve, Thanks for your feedback. Our app follows a free trial model where you can test everything for a few days and then -- if you think it's valuable to you -- decide to purchase the unlimited version with a one-time purchase that's valid a lifetime. This means that you'll get the full version during the trial period, which has all the features. From your description, it seems like you didn't experience this. Please feel free to reach out to us at contact@lightray.io if you'd like some help with the trial. In any case, I hope this clears things up! Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
  • Stopped working & asked for money

Stopped working & asked for money

    Developer Response

Hi kieronmck, It seems like your free trial ended and this is the expected behaviour. Our free trial is designed to let users fully explore our app before deciding on a one-time purchase, which we believe is fairer than a subscription model or offering a paid app right away. If you have an idea how to make this better, we happily welcome any suggestions to improve. Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
