I love Dorico…..but

As a former Finale user over 25 years, moving over to Dorico was a shock but as I’ve been getting more into Dorico. I see it was necessary.
One thing I noticed that maybe should be addressed is, if you’re on the iPad and you click up to the Learn Button to open a project page.
The learn options should address only the iPad versions being that there is some differences. Or give you 2 options, the computer version help or the iPad version help. I spent 2 hours trying to find Repeat wings for my iPad to discover after finally going to the forum that you don’t have that access on the iPad version. I understand there’s a lot of similarities but…. There’s a lot of things that are different also.
Please keep up the great work & looking forward to making charts in Dorico.

Excellent

Great integration and functionality for the iPad good features for touch and quick access to all key Dorico functionality (available in desktop applications) .added features for ease of use all round perfect integration with notations

Happy in most cases, but there could be some improvements.

Dorico is undoubtedly the most versatile engraving software I’ve tried. The iPad port is complete, usable, and just as efficient as the desktop version. I only have a few complaints.
1) App is often unstable. When in engrave mode, the window is very sensitive and it is easy to accidentally move to a completely different place in the piece. Given the fine-detail purpose of this mode, this can be very annoying. Another example is that keys on the virtual keyboard often stick down for no apparent reason. This may be by design, but I fail to realize what it could be for.
2) Separate purchase to the desktop version, even when signed in to Steinberg ID. I own Dorico Elements, and yet I can’t afford to pay for the—more expensive—full iPad version. I understand if this is because they are developed separately.
3) Inability to use 3rd-party VST plugins. Maybe this is because of the A/M architecture, but it would be awesome to use NP, Groove Agent, or Magical8bitplug in the mobile version.

Keep up the good work 😁

Still quite a way to go

I have an M1 IPad Pro and I love that I can take this on the go however I wouldn’t rely on this app just yet as it keeps corrupting my files saying ‘error opening file’ meaning I can’t go back to the same file again. Also keeps crashing when I switch to another app like YouTube. As a transcriber it’s app switching is a must and Dorico needs to be more stable to support this kind of switching. For now just stick to PC is my honest feedback.

Excellent app but needs to fix file corruption

Dorico for iPad is an excellent app. It helped me learn a lot about writing music and notation without a lot of education. I can write on the go..I dont have to be sat on a desk to write music, which is quite revolutionary I think. This allows me find opportunities to transcribe my recordings. For however far my music transcription and development will go, I owe a lot to the flexibility of Dorico for iPad. I also find that the tutorials for the desktop version also help with the mobile version because they are so alike. I only use iPad version and I anticipate smooth transition once I get on the desktop version.

Now just one pending issue I hope to return to edit out, is that I face file corruption almost everyday as of October 2024 with the iPad version. I hope the team finds a way to recreate this problem and trace it, because so far the fixes haven’t worked.

Great product when it works

I have to use Dorico for school, and we have it on our school Mac lab, but I got the iPad version to use at home so I can work on my projects when I’m not at the university. When the app works, it’s great! It’s similar to the desktop version and is easy to use. I paid for the lifetime version because I thought it would be an amazing deal. However, half the time, the app crashes every 2-3 minutes and does not save my progress (after the most recent update on Oct. 9 it’s crashing within seconds of opening the app). I worked on the same 3 bar passage for 2 hours the other night because it kept crashing and reverting my file back to where it was before it crashed. My iPad is up to date, the app is up to date, and I even restarted my iPad and deleted/redownloaded the app. It’s frustrating when I’ve spent $120 to be able to do my homework at home. 2 stars because the app is great when it works.

The music app on my iPad Pro

I used the free version for a couple years then I decided I needed to do more with the engraving pages so I pulled the trigger and paid the one time upgrade price. Amazing!

Dorico proved to be the best of them all for me

Over the years I have used Symphony Pro 6, Sibelius (1 month trial) and StaffPad. Each had their limitations and recently I moved to Dorico for iPad. Dorico proved to be the best of them all but with all its power came the challenge of its complexities to fathom out, having said that I was convinced it was the best for me and so I paid for the lifetime version.

The only limitation |’ve encountered so far is the usage of unfamiliar terms, e.g. voltas are called repeat endings.

The tutorial videos helped me get started and there are a lot of other helpful videos on YouTube. There is a forum at Steinberg.help where I have just found, and downloaded a useful manual which hopefully will help me get familiarised with the terminology.

Happy Crossgrader

I came to Dorico from Finale, which I grew up learning and had become familiar enough with to be wary of learning a new workflow. And my expectations have been really blown away! I feel invigorated and excited, rather than daunted, by large-scale scoring & notation projects that I have coming up.

The iPad version has feature parity with Mac version (at least for my purposes) and iCloud integration works very well. Overall, very impressed and excited by the app and what it means for my future as a music educator and professional.

Note input is infuriating

For a professional scoring app I was hoping to be able to easily input notes with Apple Pencil and put in complex syncopated rhythms straight away. Trying to do it on iPad is like pulling teeth. Dorico would be so much better with a Sibelius style keypad for note input. I wish these companies would end their stupid spat and combine the best of both programs.
