Thanks to all who reported bugs and errors! You found one too? Then post it preferably on GitHub (EscolarProgramming/NVDARemotePublic) or send me an email to kontakt@mjs-soft.de In this version I fixed a few bugs that could cause the app to hang or crash. I also improved the key layout.

Description of NVDARemote

NVDARemote is an app to remote control a NVDA screen reader. This app is the client software, you have to setup a seperate NVDARemote server in your network. To use this app, you'll need an external keyboard. After the connection is established, all inputs made on the external keyboard will be forwarded to the NVDARemote server, including the special keys Strg, Alt, Windows, Esc, F1-12 and so on. Attention: You need an external keyboard to control the NVDARemote PC. The output of TTS is contolled by the ringtone volume, not by the media volume. You have to enable the ringtone (lever on the upper left side).

  • As of December 2023 this is not at all usable

Unfortunately, this app can no longer be used. It is another example of an app which has not been updated. NVDA has grown tremendously and remains an incredibly useful tool. I wish the developer would return to activity. This app could be so handy.
  • Issues with the app on iPad and bluetooth keyboard case

This app works fairly well, but there are a few issues. First, using an iPad and keyboard case, whether that be a bluetooth one or even something like the Magic Keyboard from Apple, we don’t have access to function keys, thus making strokes like alt f4 impossible. Would be great if there was a way to do that from within the app, even with something like virtual function keys, or buttons in the app that would perform some of the more commmon keystrokes. Secondly, while basic NVDA reads out okay, I am connecting to a computer running Station Playlist, a software that is used for online radio. There is an NVDA addon for this, that makes the program read better with NVDA, but when using this app, it’s almost like the addon isn’t installed. It reads that window as if the addon were not present on the remote computer, which I find rather odd. If this could be fixed, it would be a huge help.
  • My keyboard input doesn’t get passed

I’m able to connect to a remote device with no problem, and hear speech from that device so long as I am using the remote keyboard to control the machine. But when I use my external keyboard with my phone, my phone takes the keyboard presses itself and navigates around the screen of the app. Even without voiceover turned on. I don’t know if this is an app problem, a keyboard problem, or what kind of problem. I’m using a logitech k380 and its website says it has OS specific keyboard layouts, so maybe I just need to get a plain external keyboard. Hmm. Even tried turning quickNav on and off... no dice.
Interestingly, I can get the tab key on this keyboard to work in any text field outside of the app. Interesting. Maybe there should be a specific multiline text field where input is confined to which the keyboard/phone would see as you just typing but in reality keypresses from that field are passed to the remote device? Hmmm.
Anyway, it’s a cool idea/concept, except I can’t work with the app so I give it 3 stars. I did try going to the app support website but it was in another language.
