Description of Lucidly

Lucidly collects health readings while you are sleeping via the watch. The readings are evaluated using artificial intelligence to determine when you have entered rapid eye movement (REM) of your sleep cycle. When REM is detected, the watch will alert you by triggering tactile and or audible signals. The user can attempt to recognize the signal in their dreaming state, or wake up and attempt to reenter REM via any lucid dreaming induction method of choice. Lucidly is the first and only application that specifically targets this phase of the sleep cycle using health readings in combination with machine learning and haptic signaling. The application works well and supports WILD, WBTB, DEILD and DILD induction techniques, and is available in two operating modes: Inference (REM detection and alerts), and hypnagogic (periodic haptics for sleep entry). Lucidly integrates with Apple's health kit for functionality. User permission is required to read and write data. REM prediction is performed by neural networks while the application is in session and the user is asleep. Lucidly has an overall accuracy > 80%. REM inference is an approximation and results may vary. Familiarity and some experience with lucid dreaming induction techniques is recommended before subscribing. Lucidly provides the following features: - Real time REM prediction with auto shut-off tactile and audible signaling. - REM stage determined by artificial neural networks (AI). - Greater than 80% model accuracy. - Two operating modes: Inference and hypnagogic. Modes can run in tandem or independently. - Ability to adjust prediction thresholds, haptics, session and alert durations. - Analytics and charts generated for each session with notification timestamps. - Seamlessly integrates and displays Sleep App metrics. - Ability to playback sessions and test different settings against REM detection models. - No registration required to use the application. - No personally identifying information is collected. - Subscriptions are auto-renewable and can be cancelled any time. - All plans include a FREE 7-day trial. =============== IN-APP PURCHASE: Monthly: $5.99 Yearly: $39.99 ($3.33 / mo) - Payment will be charged to iTunes account at confirmation of purchase. - Subscriptions automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24-hours before the end of the current period. - Account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period, and identify the cost of the renewal. - Subscriptions may be managed by the user and auto-renewal may be turned off by going to the user's Account Settings after purchase. =================== BEFORE YOU SUBSCRIBE: Lucidly requires Apple Watch for functionality. This application will not work without a paired Apple Watch and installed companion Lucidly WatchOS application. Familiarity and some experience with lucid dreaming induction techniques is recommended. Reviews of Lucidly

  • Works great! Here are my tips for using it

I have had this app installed for about a week, and have spent a lot of time working with it. It works great, you just have to know how to use it. It does exactly what it says it will, and it's the ONLY app for an Apple Watch/iPhone that can do what it does. The app uses health readings to evaluate for REM sleep in real time! This is exactly what you want for Lucid Dreaming attempts. However, you MUST use it correctly for it to work. It's not the developer's fault that the following is required, it's just the way it is, and I'm thankful he has done what is necessary to give us this great app to use.

Before trying to use the app for the first time, I recommend opening the Lucidly app on your iPhone, going to the "Customize" tab, and clicking on the "i" box in the top left to read about all the settings and understand them. You will spend the first few days using this app tweaking the settings to find the right Haptic response and alert time to get your attention while dreaming without waking you up, or to wake you up if you're doing WBTB, etc.

Now, here is how to use the app:

    First, personal watch settings:
I would recommend setting your Apple watch to not wake on wrist raise, so it doesn't light up all night long every time your roll over or move your hand, etc. These are personal settings that are really up to you. I also dim my watch screen and turn off crown roll wake up.

    Second, Sleep Focus:
You need to have Sleep Focus running while using the Lucidly app. Apple's sleep tracking is finicky, and this part is your responsibility. You must learn how to use your own devices. For me personally, rather than setting a sleep schedule, I like to turn it on manually just before I lay down. But this must be done FIRST, before starting the Lucidly app. However you want to deal with running Apple's Sleep Tracking data is up to you, but you have to have Sleep Focus on.

Third, open the Lucidly app on both your Apple Watch and your iPhone at the same time. THIS PART IS CRUCIAL. You must have them both in the foreground, then click the start button on the Lucidly app on the iPhone, and then you CANNOT OPEN ANYTHING ELSE! You also MUST NOT TURN OFF YOUR IPHONE SCREEN! Leave it on all night long. The iPhone screen will automatically dim after a few seconds on it's own. When I get up to use the bathroom, I take the iPhone with me so it doesn't loose connection with the watch. This step may not be completely necessary, but I'm not taking any chances, because it all requires so much perfection to work properly, and when you care to do it right, it does work perfectly. After adjusting the Threshold after a few nights of sleep, I've got it down to a success rate of around 90% accuracy of alerting me during an REM, and not during other stages of sleep. It works very good.

    Enjoy, and happy dreaming!

    Developer Response

Thank you kindly for taking the time to provide a review. Lucidly has a simple interface, however there are complex behind the scenes functionality. We encourage users to read the Instructions For Use carefully (Menu > Manuals > Instructions), and contact our support team if there are any questions regarding setup, settings & optimal configurations. Lucidly can be used and will work well without Apple Sleep (we use our own proprietary AI for determining REM in real-time). However, we do encourage users to run sessions with Sleep enabled in order to compare Lucidly’s predictions (and adjust settings as needed) with Apple’s calculated sleep stages. Thanks again for trying out the application. We're ecstatic to hear results have been great!
  • Too buggy

It is hit or miss if the software will keep working. I get it all setup, pulse light on face of watch is going and app on phone is running, then I wake up in the morning and it’s off. Check the logs to see an error soon after I went to bed.

Also, it could really use a daytime reality check feature. Nothing crazy complicated, but just the option for random notifications to check if you’re dreaming. Seems stupid I need to use a separate app for that at this subscription price.

    Developer Response

Thank you for the review and feedback. Please contact support, and or reference our in-app support FAQ regarding settings and events that may disrupt sessions. Connection errors should immediately end the session and prompt an error message on both the iOS and watchOS devices.
  • Works well when you play with the setting!

I’ve been using this app for about 2 or so weeks now. At first I though it was straight trash. Then I played around with the haptic alarm length, delay, and used “theater mode” on my watch to prevent any accidental turn offs. It works wonderfully now!!

It definitely wakes me up mid dream during the latter part of my sleep cycle. This has improved dream recall significantly. I’ve still not had a lucid dream yet, but I do fee closer to that goal and I do feel this does accurately wake you up during REM cycles.

I’ve had no issues with exercise data being recorded as I saw in other reviews. Sleep recording on the Health app also seems to be entirely unaffected by using this app.

    Developer Response

Thank you for trying out the application. One of the goals is to expose as many controls as possible to end users, so that users can experiment and adjust settings as needed. Please feel free to email us if you have any questions, and or just to give us updates regarding your experience. We would be tremendously appreciative of any additional feedback or thoughts for improvements! Please keep an eye out for version 1.10.0 for even more controls and new features!
