Description of FindPaintColor

Trying to find a paint color to match an unknown existing wall (or other surface) color? Or maybe find lighter or darker colors of the same hue, or possibly complementary colors? FindPaintColor finds the best-match paint colors from thousands available from major paint vendors, by analyzing a photo of your unknown color with a specified white color chip available free from your paint dealer. The photo is taken within the app, and must be taken in natural (window) lighting only. Although other high-accuracy solutions require an external color sensor, FindPaintColor uses the iPhone camera and advanced image processing, so no separate color measurement device is required. Accuracy is similar to external color sensing devices, and will identify the nearest few color chips for your final match, including the many that are available but not usually on display at your paint store. The app can save multiple trips back and forth to your dealer and eliminates the vexing need to bring in a sample. It finds paints from these four major paint vendors: Behr, Benjamin Moore, PPG, and Sherwin Williams. The app also finds paints darker or lighter than your color, and complementary colors, using industry-standard color wheel methods. It provides industry-standard ‘sRGB’ (standard Red Green Blue) values, to allow finding paints from other vendors. It also shows HSV (Hue Saturation Value) and LRV (Light Reflectance Value) numbers, to help you compare colors numerically as well as by eye. The required white color chip is used by the app to measure ambient light – a must for accuracy, and as long used by professional photographers to ensure color accuracy. This white chip may be any one of the following, available free from your paint dealer: Behr: PR-W15 (PPU18-06) Ultra Pure White PR-W14U Bit of Sugar Benjamin Moore: OC-65 (2120-70) Chantilly Lace OC-68 Distant Gray PPG: PPG1172-1 Snow Storm PPG1049-1 Snowy Mount Sherwin Williams: SW 7757 Highly Reflective White SW 7006 Extra White Any one of the above chips will work to find the closest colors from all four paint vendors. The app provides simple instructions for use, and trial demonstration photos to ensure a smooth start.

Reviews of FindPaintColor

  • It really works.

I recently moved into a resale home that is less than a year old. Since it has the original builder paint job it is a very thin coat and it got a few scratches while moving in.
I emailed the builder’s rep for our development to ask him what brand and color pain they used. I hadn’t heard back from in for a few days so I downloaded this app.
When using the app, I determined that my color was SW 7008- Alabaster. I went to Lowe’s yesterday and bought a quart and it’s a great match. Then today I finally heard back from the builder…they used SW 7008- Alabaster!
I thought the app was very intuitive and easy to use, and most of all….ACCURATE!

Hi Rxdtyart: Thanks so much for the detailed review! FindPaintColor does not hassle for reviews, so it is very highly appreciated that you went above the call to write this up!
  • doesn’t work how one would expect

you can’t upload an image to detect colors. it doesn’t have baseline white chips already in the app, you have to go get them & take a photo with (complicated) specific instructions. not helpful for regular people.

    Developer Response

Hi LuckyGirl: FindPaintColor works only by taking an in-app photo with a known white chip, as the Product Page says, so it can provide accurate color matching by measuring ambient light. It is intended for those needing an accurate match, but not wanting to invest in an external colorimeter. There are solutions that work from an existing photo, but they can only provide an approximate guess as to the color. Thanks for taking the time to review.
  • No. No. NO!

Friends-I own a software company. I have worked with computers for over 20 years and after an hour trying to find some way to upload a photo I simply quit. Caveat Emptor! This one is bad/real bad. I should have read the reviews-that’s my mistake.

    Developer Response

As per the previous comment, FindPaintColor is not intended to work with external photos - and works only with photos taken within the app with a known white chip (as the Product Page says). This allows it to measure ambient light, as required to achieve high color matching accuracy with the iPhone camera, without requiring an external color measurement sensor.
