Description of UIST Unearthed

Welcome to Uist Unearthed ( Ulaidhean Uibhist ), the home of virtual archaeological exploration in the Outer Hebrides. Discover the archaeology of Uist like never before, using exciting Augmented Reality technology and a GPS enabled map to track your location along the Hebridean Way. Capture and share moments with family and friends as you explore and interact with Uist’s incredible archaeological sites. Available from Summer 2021, the first site that has been interpreted is the fascinating Bronze Age settlement of Cladh Hallan, South Uist - where some of the earliest known mummified bodies in Europe were discovered. Augmented Reality lets you see the original settlement, as it would have been 3000 years ago, in the modern day landscape. Enjoy, for the first time, detailed 3D reconstructions which have never before been produced of this internationally significant site. A further six incredible archaeological sites will be added over the coming months, so be sure to keep the app so you can enjoy these exciting updates! You’ll also be able to browse other archaeological resources and discover more of what Uist has to offer. Share your stories and experiences via social media remembering to use the hashtag #UistUnearthed - we’d love to see your photos and discoveries. Downloading this app in advance using a WiFi connection before your visit is recommended. The app can also be downloaded via 4G, however connection may be limited in certain areas along the trail. Features: - Augmented Reality 3D reconstructions of archaeological sites - 108 km/67 miles of Hebridean Way to explore - GPS enabled map to find your way and trigger the AR reconstructions - Take photos or videos of family and friends, within AR environments, and share them online - Animations, games, and 3D objects to explore - A directory to browse for deeper learning on the archaeology of Uist - An option to share your own thoughts and comments on your discoveries at each site - Signposting to museums and other culturally significant locations - Signposting to hospitality, retail and WIFI locations The Uist Virtual Archaeology Project is delivered by Lews Castle College UHI, in collaboration with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. The project is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) administered by NatureScot. As a result of better quality natural and cultural heritage provision awareness of the distinctive heritage assets of the region will be increased, making them more accessible and better understood. It is also funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES), Lews Castle College UHI, and Stòras Uibhist. The project gratefully acknowledges the contributions of staff from the University of Sheffield, Professor Mike Parker Pearson (Institute of Archaeology, University College London), Professor Jacqui Mulville (School of History, Archaeology and Religion, Cardiff University) and Ceòlas Uibhist. Devices will require AR-Core / AR-Kit Capability.

Adds dimension to a tour

My dad and I downloaded this app as a part of our Outer Hebrides tour. This augmented reality gave us a great tourist stop with a decent hike, and felt like a respectful way to gain a museum experience in protected land.

Excellent App

The app is excellent. It really helps bring to life the remains of the ancient sites.

Top tip for other users….. We did have problems getting one of the sites to scan because cattle had been scratching themselves against the post and hair from their coat was wound round the nails holding the QR code in place. This stopped the scanner working. It took us a while to realise what the problem was but once we pulled the hair away the scan worked immediately.
